    10 Essential Components of Preaching

In the last chapter of Scripture, he writes the apostle Paul left Timothy, with these words: “1 I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; 2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.” (2 Tim. 4:1–2). With these words to Timothy as a foundation, what follows are ten essential commitments that every preacher should have as he prepares to preach the timeless and sufficient Word of God faithfully.

    1. Preaching must be biblically centered and biblically grounded.
    2. Preaching must be God-exalting.
    3. Preaching must be Christward.
    4. Preaching must be doctrinally and theologically accurate.
    5. Preaching must be dependent before and after the preaching event.
    6. Preaching must be well-prepared.
    7. Preaching must be authoritative.
    8. Preaching must demand something.
    9. Preaching must be both articulate and imaginative.
    10. Preaching must be passionate and engaging.

We discuss these Ten Essential Components In Preaching. Let me know what you think.

Let's face it: We are not good listeners. This is true in private conversations and when it comes to listening to preaching. I want to share a few thoughts on improving our listening skills in this episode. This is not an exhaustive list of tips. These are a few that came to mind as I thought about this issue.

Thank you to Pastor Clint Davidson from Chapel Hill Baptist Church in Birmingham, AL for suggesting this episode.

  • 124 - Mistakes To Avoid In Biblical Word Studies
    Jul 4 2024

    Send us a Text Message.

In this episode, we continue talking about biblical word studies. Today, we want to discuss six mistakes we can make when doing word studies.

Here is what not to do:
    1. Don’t conduct English-only word studies.
    2. Don’t rely on a word’s etymology.
    3. Don’t ignore how a word’s usage changes over time.
    4. Don’t collect evidence for a word’s meaning in an unbalanced way.
    5. Remember when a concept is present, though the word isn’t.
    6. Don’t be frightened into quitting.

If you can think of anything I missed, reach out and let me know.

  • 123 - Simple Steps To Biblical Word Studies
    Jun 27 2024

    Send us a Text Message.

Conducting a word study is many people’s first foray into deeper Bible study. You might do a word study when teaching the Bible, preparing for a small group, or reading for personal edification. Word studies can quickly go awry, so here are six steps to help you conduct a word study with greater confidence.

For this episode, I will use the STEP (Scripture Tools for Every Person) Bible website, which can be found at stepbible.org. Here are the steps we will cover in this episode.

    1. Pick the right word.
    2. Find the Greek or Hebrew word.
    3. Find other occurrences.
    4. Note the range of possible meanings.
    5. Check with the commentators.
    6. Make your decision.

It takes time and energy to discover a word’s meaning in a given context, but with these six steps, the help of the Spirit, and the grace of God, I trust we’ll get it right more often than we get it wrong.

  • 119 - Exegesis vs Eisegesis
    May 30 2024

    Send us a Text Message.

In today's episode, I discuss the difference between letting the Bible say what it says and making it say what the preacher wants it to. We will also discuss the differences between exegesis and eisegesis. This is not a trivial matter. It is akin to the differences between lightning and a lightning bug.

I want to make a strong case in favor of exegesis. When we practice exegesis, we "lead out" of the text, the truth placed there by the inspiration of God. When we practice eisegesis, we "lead into" the text ideas that form in our human minds.

Listen to the episode, and decide what you want to be: a preacher who tells you what God said in his Word, or one who reads into the Bible what he wants it to say. The choice seems cut and dried to me. Let me know what you think.
