    Jul 22 2024

Smylie Kaufman and Charlie Hulme look back at a highly entertaining week at Royal Troon which saw wild weather, a challenging course setup, and Xander Schauffele hoisting the Claret Jug as the winner of the 152nd Open Championship. Smylie and Charlie marvel at the new level Xander has reached this season, shedding the "best player to have never won a major tag" by winning two in his last three tries. SK and CH also reflect on the weeks of Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, and Jon Rahm, and how each will evaluate their respective major performances in 2024. The show wraps with a brief discussion of the conditions at Troon before Smylie heads off to begin a golf trip in Ireland!

  • Open Championship Day 3 Journal
    Jul 20 2024

Smylie Kaufman and Charlie Hulme recap day three at the 152nd Open Championship at Royal Troon, where Smylie is on-site broadcasting the major for NBC Sports. Saturday's conditions for the final groups, according to SK, were some of the most difficult he has seen - *ever* - for a major championship. Smylie was assigned to Justin Rose and Billy Horschel's group today, and details a round that saw the latter take the outright lead heading into Sunday. Smylie and Charlie play a guessing game using Data Golf's predictive odds ranking the five players with the best chance to hoist the Claret Jug tomorrow.

  • Open Championship Day 2 Journal
    Jul 19 2024

Smylie Kaufman and Charlie Hulme recap day two at the 152nd Open Championship at Royal Troon, where Smylie is on-site broadcasting the major for NBC Sports. Friday's cut resulted in some shocking names missing the weekend - Rory McIlroy, Ludvig Aberg, Wyndham Clark, Viktor Hovland, and Bryson DeChambeau, among others - and SK explains why that was the case given the conditions at Troon. Smylie was the walker assigned to Shane Lowry's group and goes through his bizarre playing of the 11th hole resulting in double bogey, in addition to the two birdies he made coming down the stretch to take the lead. We could not make it through the episode without discussing Smylie's attire in the booth - he donned a traditional Scottish kilt to close Friday's coverage window, and explains how that went down.

  • Open Championship Day 1 Journal
    Jul 18 2024

Smylie Kaufman and Charlie Hulme break down all the action from day one of the 152nd Open Championship at Royal Troon, where Smylie is on-site broadcasting the major for NBC Sports. On a day with wind, rain and cold dominating the early wave, it was Daniel Brown who surged to the first-round lead near the conclusion of the late wave, while Smylie called the action from the booth on Peacock. SK and CH reflect on the day that Shane Lowry had sitting in solo second, a guy that Smylie loved as part of his weekly picks. Rory McIlroy's round got away from him quickly on Thursday - Smylie offers insights as the walker who was assigned to follow Rory's group. Finally, Smylie and Charlie discuss another hot start for Justin Thomas on the strength of an excellent putting performance, and whether he can sustain that momentum for the next three days.
