  • Joe Harris' Season-Ending 2nd Ankle Surgery
    Mar 11 2022

Joe Harris underwent ankle surgery in November 2021 with a 4-8 week  recovery timeline.  Unfortunately, his recovery did not play out as  expected, and it was recently announced that he will undergo a 2nd  surgery and miss the rest of the '21-22 season.  We discuss the  multitude of factors that can lead to a 2nd surgery, how medical  decision making for an NBA athlete differs from that of the lay person,  and how in spite of advanced technology, modern medicine, and a track  record of success, doctors may not always get it right.

  • Odell Beckham Jr. and the ACL Re-Tear
    Feb 16 2022

The Sports OrthoPods discuss Odell Beckham Jr's bittersweet end to  the 2021-22 season - he left with a championship and another torn ACL.   Beckham tore the ACL in his left knee in 2020 and made a successful  return to the field, as evidenced by his domination during the first  half of Super Bowl LVI.  A non-contact pivoting injury to the same knee  unfortunately resulted in another ACL tear.  We talk about ACL re-tears,  and how they are much more common than one would think.  We discuss  risk factors that may predispose someone who has previously had ACL  surgery to tear again, and what the 2nd surgery, what we call revision  surgery, is like.

  • S3 E19 - Zion Williamson's Ongoing Foot Saga
    Dec 17 2021

The Sports OrthoPods discuss Zion Williamson's complications following  foot surgery in the off season.  We previously discussed his injury when  it was first disclosed at NBA Media Day that he sustained a Jones  Fracture in the off season and underwent surgical repair.  While this is  surgery with a high success rate, there have been NBA players in the  past who have not had a smooth recovery.  Unfortunately, that is the  case with Zion.  We discuss the news of a biologic injection given to  Zion to try and stimulate bone healing, the chances of success at this  point, and the possibility of further surgery needed in the future.

  • S3 E18 - Jack Eichel's Cervical Spine Surgery & Controversy
    Dec 3 2021

The Sports OrthoPods discuss Jack Eichel's cervical spine surgery and  the controversy surrounding his desire to have a cervical disc  replacement instead of anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF)  that was recommended by his team's medical staff when he was still a  member of the Buffalo Sabres.  According to the NHL's Collective  Bargaining Agreement, it is the team's medical staff, and not the  player, who has final say on treatment decisions.  Eichel was eventually  traded to the Las Vegas Golden Knights where he was permitted to  undergo the disc replacement surgery.  We break down the scientific and  ethical dilemmas that exist in this fascinating story.
