Amie had a spell of BPPV but did the maneuvers and just went on with her day, like the resourceful and driven women she is. Symptoms didn't go away, however; instead, they got worse. Soon she experienced 24/7 symptoms like vertigo, pain, nausea, headache, balance issues and more. It's hard to tell today from her bright and happy appearance, but she was depressed and downright miserable. When doctors, medicine and physiotherapy didn't work, she started looking elsewhere. Learn about the hallmark inconsistencies in her symptoms, the benefit of exercise and how her history with OCD played a role. We also get to hear about how she worked with her thoughts and emotions in her recovery work. Today Amie is 90% recovered and easily handle the little symptoms occasionally appearing. Also, she's learned about the emotional connection to her symptoms and how to handle that. • 54. A mindbody perspective on hormone transitions, menopause & chronic symptoms w/Lorraine Faehndrich
    May 22 2024
This is a gem of a conversation with Lorraine Faehndrich, NBC-HWC, who specializes in working with women experiencing pelvic pain, many of whom are going through hormonal transitions. It is well known that women are more vulnerable to vestibular disorders and chronic pain than men, and current research and my experience suggest that this vulnerability is more pronounced during times of hormonal transitions like post-partum, pre-menstrual, perimenopausal and menopausal periods. In this interview, we discuss why we must look at this phenomenon through a biopsychosocial lens that takes into account the stress, emotional strain and responsibilities that women are facing during these times. You are NOT just a bag of estrogen, and treating symptoms should always take into account the whole person. We also spend some time delving into Lorraine’s approach with clients and the important of pleasure and enjoyment in recovery. • 50. Austin's Success Story: recovery from BPPV, vertigo, visual symptoms derealization & more with OCD
    Apr 17 2024

It's a pleasure to share Austin's success story with you today! Austin always had a fear of dizziness as well as OCD and anxiety, so it was his nightmare when he first experienced dizziness symptoms. Everything started May 2023 with a bout of BPPV that quickly morphed into dizziness, derealization, visual sway, chronic pain and more. Despite starting an SSRI, things progressively got worse until he was basically housebound in November 2023. Thankfully, at that point he decided there was nothing wrong him and he started desensitizing himself to his symptoms. In this interview, he describes some of the tools he used and how he's doing today.

Most notably, Austin experienced spinning vertigo as one of his symptoms. He even describes being able to bring it on just by focusing on it and feeling anxious! Spinning vertigo is excluded from the diagnostic definition of PPPD so many people who have it fear that they don’t have a neural circuit problem, but as Austin demonstrates, it absolutely can be a neural circuit symptom. Vestibular and medical testing can rule out a structural problem that is causing it.
