The Mage, Eyfre, prepares to leave Lakewall with a new crop of students headed to Iro to become students of The Mages Consortium. She is no stranger to traveling in the large caravans that travel between the settled areas of the continent, but doing it in comfort is something of an oddity for her.

Her attempts to adjust are interrupted by an old - and odd - acquaintance, and she recounts a story filled with half truths.

The thief, Whisper, leaves the comfort of Marauder Jal’s scars and is now traveling to become a mage. Saaut is one of the strange people known as The Grey Eyes. They have gods like The Church and power like The Consortium, but are hunted and ridiculed by both. They try to keep to themselves, but Saaut finds that he is about to be far removed from the lands he grew up in.
