True Sunlight

  • Summary

  • Previously known as the Murdaugh Murders Podcast, True Sunlight is the intersection of True Crime, journalism and systematic corruption. Welcome to the new face of MMP. True Sunlight is the antithesis of True crime. True Sunlight values accuracy over "access journalism". True Sunlight is shed with empathy — not exploitation. True Sunlight was created as a matter of public service — not just entertainment. While the name of the podcast has changed, our mission, values and team have not. We are simply expanding our horizons while continuing to shine a much needed bright light on crime and corruption wherever it appears. Celebrated journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell are taking their style of reporting beyond Alex Murdaugh and his co-conspirators while pursuing justice for all the victims you've met so far. Ranked #1 and #2 globally in 2021 and 2023 respectively as the Murdaugh Murders Podcast, True Sunlight provides unmatched insight into the crimes and criminals exposed on MMP and dives deep into new instances of corruption across the US. We empower listeners to understand their legal and judicial systems through investigative journalism while providing tools to hold agencies and public figures accountable in order to change those systems for the better. • TSP #58 - Stephen Smith UPDATE And Why the Strongest Lead in the Case Is Marred by Integrity Questions + JP Miller Cries Harassment in Wake of Mica Francis’ Death
    Jul 11 2024
Tragically this week, two abused women were failed by the justice system and allegedly killed by their partners — Lauren Johansen of Mississippi Stephanie Francis of Rhode Island. On today’s episode we’ll get into that and a lot more on why our justice system needs to be paying attention. Investigative reporters Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell give an update in the Stephen Smith case during the ninth anniversary of his mysterious death. Why did Highway Patrol stop looking into Stephen’s death right after receiving its strongest lead to date? Mandy and Liz look into the track record of the police officer behind a tip that introduced two new names into the investigation in 2015. Also on today’s episode, 911 calls and police records show the chaos of Pastor JP Miller’s life in the aftermath of two big scandals he brought onto his church — his 2015 affair with Mica Francis and Mica’s recent death. After combing through dozens of reports involving the church, True Sunlight has a better picture about how JP and those in his circle have regarded the backlash. In one harrowing call to police — in which JP claims to be followed by an armed individual — police get a taste of JP’s flair for drama and the many contradictions of his personality. • TSP #57 - ‘40 Days and 40 Nights’: 911 Call and Reports Show Harassment and Stalking Patterns in Mica Francis Case + How The Medical Examiner Failed Mica
    Jul 4 2024
Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell continue their coverage of the Mica Francis case, starting with JP Miller’s shock and horror upon discovering a shirtless photo has been posted of him online. Social media came hard for JP this week with more accusations surrounding the tattoo of Mica’s signature he has on his torso. Solid Rock Ministries continues its battle with protesters, who were assaulted by a sprinkler this past weekend. Mandy and Liz also break down the contents of the Medical Examiner’s report into Mica’s death — needless to say, the report raises more questions than it answers but mostly Mandy and Liz were astounded at its lack of thoroughness and its reliance on non-medical evidence. Plus, a newly released 911 call sheds more light onto Mica’s state of mind on March 11, when she filed her restraining order against JP. It also sheds more light onto the broken system that failed Mica — and continues to fail women everywhere. Finally, two police reports filed by JP’s ex-wife outline very familiar accusations of harassment and stalking … as well as very familiar shrugs from law enforcement. • TSP News Break "Mini-Sode": Chris Skinner 911 call + What JP Miller’s Ex Said
    Jun 27 2024
We originally planned to take this week off entirely, but guess what happened...? We got a flood of FOIA responses in the Mica Francis case… This week, due to the dogged FOIAing from Beth Braden and brilliant mind of Liz Farrell, LunaShark was the first media outlet to receive the 911 call from the incident that led to Chris Skinner’s death on September 6, 2021. Tik Tok has been hot with Chris Skinner theories ever since the news of Mica’s death hit national headlines — but JP’s ex-wife’s mention of Skinner in recent emergency protective order documents made those theories worth investigating in our opinion. On today’s News Break “min-sode”, Investigative journalists Mandy Matney shares new details and the recently released 911 call concerning the tragic death of Chris Skinner in Myrtle Beach, SC. Mandy also highlights info available from recently released documents, while also pointing out inconsistencies in the drowning investigation and the intentional lack of witness statements. We also continue to ponder the suicide ruling on Mica and raise concerns about JP Miller's behavior. And even though today’s “mini-sode” is short, Luna Shark Premium Members are getting a second bonus episode this week where reporter and producer Sam Berlin just could not let go of a pressing question from the Murdaugh saga… where did the money go? We’ll be back next week with a full examination of all this and more... Until then Stay tuned. Stay Pesky. Love so much but lately…

I have been listening for multiple years now and you’ve really all done an incredible job providing real and trustworthy information. And on top of all the Murdaugh madness— you’ve exposed so much of the corruption evident in our legal system— not just So Carolina. I truly love Liz’s brain and how she connects dots and sees around corners—- I’m so impressed at her intelligence and the impact she’s making.

I’m sharing this small nugget of negative feedback because I believe you all deserve (and I believe - appreciate) a trend I’ve been hearing from your podcasts lately. Lately, so much of the beginning of the episode is focused on Mandy’s journey
About her book and also the surrounding accolades/ outcomes from that effort. I can easily just fast forward thru that commentary l, that feels like it lasts sometimes 3 mins up to 8 or 9 mins long.
I 100% support women achieving big things—- congratulations! I think there could be a better balance of the content. Thank you for listening!

Great Podcat

The local podcasts on the Murdaugh case are much more interesting than the national coverage.

Complicated lives

This story is very sad but also pretty complicated and there’s a lot more to come I’m sure.
This podcast does a really good job of explaining the background and why it matters.
It’s helpful that the chapters deal with each death so that the connections become clearer, and later chapters update each part of each story. There are a lot of plates to keep spinning.
Thank you for doing such great reporting.

Well done podcast

Story is unbelievable, research is top notch & podcast is well put together. This is true reporting & journalism so I’m not expecting a Morgan Freeman type of performance here; I’m expecting compelling & accurate reporting on the facts & that’s what you get here.

Love this podcast!

Murder ✅
Drugs ✅
Scandal ✅
It starts out slow in this ever growing scandal. Love that they are finally weeding out corruption in the court system and exposing these crooks. It's sad the system is so slow.

Incredible Investigative Journalism But...

I want to say the positives first:
This podcast is fantastic and I really appreciate all of the investigative efforts Mandy and the team have put forth into exposing the truth. I live in South Carolina and have for 20 years, and it is shocking to have this level of detail and deep rooted corruption exposed after many many years. Thank you for being a pillar of truth and doing incredible Investigative Journalism not just for the victims and their families, but also for the discourse surrounding SC politics and law enforcement.
The negatives: I've been following this podcast since day one, and after the first few episodes, Mandy would take a moment to criticize those who had to just point out how her voice sounded. I get it, it's frustrating when you have such a compelling story and all of this evidence and the thing that people point out is your voice. But now that I have been a weekly listener for over a year, I have to agree with the critics. In many cases it's not about what you're saying it's about how you were saying it. And Mandy, although incredibly passionate, has a very distracting delivery with the story. There is just way too much inflection rises and drops in one sentence, every sentence, for 45 minutes. I have listened to Mandy talk in interviews and she does not talk like this on a regular basis, only when reading a scripted story for the podcast. it's distracting and it takes me longer to finish the episode because I have to pause it - my head hurts. And as the podcast has developed with more traction, her delivery has gotten worse - I think she does it in an effort to make important key notes and stress the important part of the story or that sentence? But if you put that inflection on every sentence and stress that everything is important, then by that logic nothing is more important than the other.

I want to hopefully point out to Mandy that while some people are great at the investigation portion of the story, I think Liz's stage presence is better suited for the delivery , aka the story telling. AND THAT'S OKAY. Please don't let the haters take away from the phenomenal job you and the team you have done - but it's important to recognize that your audience is telling you that you're delivery and storytelling is not getting through to them and you are losing key people that you want listening to your podcast. It is incredibly distracting. You have addressed it many times that people need to stop commenting on your voice, but it's your speaking style that is just very distracting and is frustrating. Don't lose the audience because of something small like that. Thank you for all you've done, keep it up.
