  • The Prince of Egypt | Old Testament Get MCU-ified | Uncultured Universe Podcast Review
    Sep 13 2025

    Jesus Christ, it's Moses.

We're getting biblical, folks! Strap in for a look into Joe's pick from his childhood, "The Prince of Egypt" from 1998. We step through what makes this movie so special to Joe and integral to his upbringing, how and why it won an Oscar, and ponder at what an alternative universe would look like if this movie out-performed "Shrek" (both concurrent projects from Dreamworks Studios).

Next episode is IT, y'all. After 3 years, almost to the exact date, Uncultured Universe is closing up shop and moving onto other hobbies and pursuits. It's been a great ride, but all good things must come to an end. So with that, we'll be doing a rarified, never-before-seen-or-heard-of DOUBLE FEATURE episode where we'll look at two movies at the same time: Justin's pick "Pee-wee's Big Adventure" from 1985, and Joe's pick "A League of Their Own" from 1992. Do these two movies have more in common than you realize? Listen and find out.

  • Mortal Kombat | Basically Wii Sports Resort | Uncultured Universe Podcast Review
    Aug 26 2025

    GET OVER HERE!

We got another 30 year old classic coming in hot - this time with the 1995 cult classic "Mortal Kombat." Based on the deeply popular and long-lasting video game series, this movie capstones the Justin-loves-karate-fighting-movies Trilogy with an enigmatic bang. Filled with super rad fight scenes, practical sets and backdrops, this movie only comes up short with Joe's sentiment of "there's literally no other way to do this movie BUT to do it silly." Always a good time when the uncultured enjoys the flick.

Join us next time for our third-to-last episode EVER with Joe's pick, "Prince of Egypt."

  • Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit | And Also With You | Uncultured Universe Podcast Review
    Aug 9 2025

    Oh happy day!

We're coming back to the convent and doing our first ever sequel to an episode we've covered previously with "Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit" from 1993. Another iconic flick in the repertoire, which brings back the infectious buzz of Whoopi Goldberg, and that classic early 1990's feel-good atmosphere. While still a good time, filled with memorable performances, musical numbers, and copious amounts of montages, this movie feels more made-for-tv and somewhat trope-y at times. But that was the 90's man!

Join us next time when we complete the Justin-Ninja-Karate trilogy (previous installments include Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie!) with another 30 year old cult classic: 1995's "Mortal Kombat" - Hi-yah!

  • Sister Act | Helluva Good Time | Uncultured Universe Podcast Review
    Jul 3 2025

Closing out Pride Month™ 3 days late. How queer.

We take on Joe's pick for the month, 1992's "Sister Act" starring Whoopi Goldberg, and boy what a wave of nostalgia across the board. This flick is like a warm hug, welcoming you back to simpler times. A tight, albeit contrived, classic 90's plot, powerful performances, and memorable musical numbers - this movie has it all. Whoopi shines with her insanely infectious allure, and is perfectly complimented by Maggie Smith, Kathy Najimy, and Wendy Makkena. So kick back with a can of Surge, snack on some Dunkaroos, and enjoy this perfect 90's capsule of a film with us!

Next time we're back to a Justin pick, celebrating the 30th anniversary of "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie"!

  • Interview With the Vampire: Gayer Than You Realize | Uncultured Universe Podcast Review
    Jun 7 2025

We're back bitches! And just in time for Pride Month™

After a brief hiatus, the boys join forces again to look at a beloved flick from Justin than Joe has never seen before: Interview With the Vampire! A thrilling, deep commentary on queer relationships, exploration, and defining one's "otherness" are the cornerstones of this peak 90's movie. Heralded by Hollywood heavy hitters Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise, this piece of cinema unapologetically leans into Anne Rice's homoerotic overtones much to the delight of many viewers. Without a doubt, consider this a gay/bi-panic inducing flick.

Next up is Joe's pick for Justin, the 1992 comedy classic "Sister Act"!

  • The Handmaiden | Gross Uncles & Sapphic Love | Uncultured Universe Podcast Review
    Mar 5 2025

The first entry into our Batshit Crazy mini series, 2016's "The Handmaiden" is a South Korean psychological erotic thriller from Park Chan-wook, and boy does it deliver on assaulting the senses. The mind reels, the loins tingle, and the ears are bombarded by heaps of wet, writhing soundscapes.

The boys discuss what makes this movie a true batshit entry; from it's non-linear storytelling devices, to it's downright over-the-top use of sensual erotica, it will get it's hooks in to take you on a journey and talk you through it. Park Chan-wook obviously loves looking at the uglier side of humanity (re: The Vengence Trilogy), and The Handmaiden is no different. Familial wickedness, the art of deception, and what it means to break generational curses and taboos all play a part in this film.

Tune in next time where we look at Justin's Batshit Crazy submission: 1985's "Pee-wee's Big Adventure"!

  • Bluey: Supreme Emotional Damage Television | Uncultured Universe Podcast Review
    Jan 22 2025

    Put simply: Bluey goes hard.

It’s 2025 and we’re back, baby! We come out swinging for the fences as we discuss the wildly successful children’s show “Bluey.” Also this episode we welcome our very first Uncultured guest and our friend, Matt Hobbs of Puppy Songs. The three-way chat cast a good spectrum of familiarity with Bluey, from the wholly initiated to the brand new.

We watched seven key Bluey episodes that demonstrate the brilliance of the show in terms of concise storytelling and flawless cinematic execution. “Magic Xylophone”, “Camping”, “Dance Mode”, “Sleepytime”, “Grandad”, “Rain”, and “Space.” Each episode has their own lesson and iconic moment that accurately encapsulates what Bluey is all about: radical empathy and earnest authenticity coupled with learning through play makes for lasting, pure television magic.

Buckle up for next month when we come at you with our most batshit insane films: “The Handmaiden” picked by Joe, and “Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure” picked by Justin.
