  • Flood Myths Pt. 1 The Fall & Antediluvian Period
    Nov 30 2021

We are all familiar with one flood myth or another, though remarkably we notice this motif all over the world! It has been imagined since antiquity that they must detail a cosmic event. So what history can be excavated from this universally remembered event? Past that even, we have a story that has evolved drastically over the many generations it has been shared. What metaphors do these stories share? What do they say about antiquity's views on the world around them? Most importantly, what can we learn about ourselves?

Part one deals with the fall motif and the antediluvian epoch. Namely, the period before the flood, in this episode we set the stage for the disaster to come.

  • Myths as a Ritual
    Sep 10 2021

Season 1 of Understanding Mythology finishes with myths as expressions of religious ritual. Today we look into the practical religious application of mythology and see how myth charters ritualistic norms and its significance. Mankind all over the world has desired a link to heaven in order to know how to properly conduct themselves and to ensure further sustenance. Specifically, we look into sacrifice, initiation, purification and rituals pertaining to seasonal renewal as our four major components of religious ritual as they are presented to us in mythology.

  • Charter Myths
    Aug 15 2021

In today's episode we hear and watch the almighty gods upon high and emulate their words and actions. The gods teach us through their divine word, and when it comes to their works within myths, it is monkey-see, monkey-do. On a mortal level, those in power sought to forever stay upon the throne and continue transmitting their truth. So then, charter myths are born, the stories created out of the want to stay on the paved path; to pursue the status quo.

  • Myth as an Allegory for Nature
    Jul 16 2021

Today we take a step into the natural realm in an attempt to find our gods hiding behind the masks of the elements. We initially look into the world around us and submit that there are things within nature we cannot understand and thusly discover the realm of the supernatural. However, upon glaring into the void the eye of the void peers back into us, and we find gods within ourselves.

  • Myth as a History
    Jul 8 2021

In our first dive into better understanding mythology we look at the idea that myths are accounts of history. They detail events that actually occurred, albeit embellished over time. What can we learn about myths  when we drag gods down to human scale and wipe away the mystique and the shenanigans?
