Unpacking: People Who Travel

By: Sam Clark and Tom Parker
  • Summary

  • How we experience travel is unique - depending on who we are and how we navigate the world. We bring our own perspectives to bear on the journey and the destination. Historically, travel writing has assumed that everyone’s travel experience mirrors that of the writer, who has generally been a privileged white western man. So, who better than two tall Englishmen to mansplain that for you? Hosted by two well-seasoned and curious travellers, Sam Clark, co-founder of Experience Travel Group and photographer Tom Parker. Steeped in travel culture written about and created by people like themselves, they want to broaden their knowledge and perspective of what it means to travel for others. Sam and Tom literally want to unpack travel… In an increasingly polarised and volatile world, it feels more important than ever to find points of connection and understanding through the vehicle of travel and cultural exchange. • Episode 03: Tharik Hussain
    Jan 16 2025

Travel writer Tharik Hussien joins us to talk about his journey in the footsteps of Evliya Celebi, an Ottoman traveller who wrote about his journey through the Balkans in the seventeenth century. Tharik's book, Minarets in the Mountains, challenges perceptions about European views of the Balkans, its relationship to and connection with Islam, and general Western exoticism and 'othering'. He shows how Islam has been largely written out of the historical European story. He also brings an often overlooked destination to life and introduces his family and the perspectives of his daughters, in particular, to the journey.
