In Episode 10 of Vision & Graft I'm chatting to Hannah Lee, a designer I've had the pleasure of working alongside on a variety of projects over the last ten years and for the ten years prior to that we went to college and school together. Hannah is someone I've often gone to for professional advice and she has a great deal of career wisdom to share. In the episode Hannah and I discuss the merits of freelancing and she shares what the experience is like compared to 'perming' at an agency. Hannah has realised that she needs to strive to maintain that balance if she wants to be effective at work and she also covers working abroad as a freelancer and finding the balance far from home. Saying no is a big topic on this podcast and we discuss this in the context of charging what you are worth and we mull over how to get to the point where what you consistently charge aligns with what you think your skills are worth. Hannah also raises an important point about women in powerful roles within advertising and how she has been working on improving her confidence to keep progressing and growing in her career. It always inspires me to hear him speak. In this episode we pick up where we left off in Part 1 with Jack sharing what guides him when prioritising between his various creative endeavours. We also consider the concept known as 'essentialism' as opposed to perfectionism and how taking this approach can help us to move forward in our careers and with our work more effectively. We discuss Jack's approach to his wellbeing and the things that he does to help, particularly as society is reopening in the UK after Covid. Jack shares his motivation behind his creative work as I push him to find out what it is that gives him his creative spark and the impressive drive that i’ve always admired in himFinally we discuss what success is to Jack and he flips the question back at me before we get onto my slightly controversial interpretation of Singing in the Rain, the song by Gene Kelly.
