  • 80: [Susanne Gold-Smith] Every Single Move I Made // Part 1
    Jul 26 2024
Content warning: stalking, emotional and mental abuse, suicidal ideation, sexual assault, and rape.

Susanne Gold-Smith is a mother, creative, advocate, and survivor from New York. Her ability to transcend tragedy and prevail after heartache are defining characteristics apparent in each of her endeavors. However, her personal journey took a dark turn after she was allegedly stalked and sexually assaulted by a private investigator hired by her then-estranged husband’s legal team. The event would launch her down a precarious legal path and an onslaught of efforts to seek justice. All that continues to come next in Susanne’s battle is a testament not only to her personal strength, but also to what the criminal justice system requires of victims. The Broken Cycle Media team is extremely grateful for her time, energy, and the advocacy she is curating by sharing and bringing awareness today.

Content warning: child-to-parent violence, sibling abuse, sexual assault, childhood sexual assault, and suicidal ideation.

As shared in Part One of his updates, John-Michael Lander is a former Olympic-bound diver, actor, author, speaker, and advocate. His words and efforts have been seen everywhere from TIME magazine to the TED Talk stage; he has entitled his experiences of sexual abuse and trafficking “An Athlete’s Silence.” By sharing his story on What Came Next Episode 22 entitled An Athlete’s Silence and elsewhere, his goal is to bring awareness to predatory practices in the athletic and education worlds, as well as to change the way society receives sexual abuse victims. I am so honored he joined me AGAIN today to discuss updates in his journey. He also had the beautiful idea of flipping the script and host-swapping with Amy B. Chesler for this second part of these two episodes. The Broken Cycle Media deeply appreciates John-Michael’s time, dedication to his advocacy, and for the creativity he is bringing to these episodes.

    Jun 21 2024
Content Warning: sexual assault, rape, child sexual abuse, nonconsensual pornography, and suicidal ideation.

Season 11, Episode 11 of Something Was Wrong entitled [Dara] Very Sorry, first aired on February 23rd, 2023. The episode poignantly shared Dara’s account of a sexual assault she experienced while on her Spring Break Senior trip. However, her heartache did not end there though. Years later, after Dara had become a mother and began to cultivate her own healing journey, her sister experienced a similar trauma. From that moment on, Dara was compelled to share their stories in hopes of changing the criminal justice landscape for other survivors. Although Something Was Wrong was the first public space she shared, her efforts have not slowed down at all. The Broken Cycle Media team is incredibly grateful for Dara’s time, energy, legislative efforts, and for sharing with our audience all that’s come next in her battle to change the statute of limitations for Indiana survivors of sexual assault.

  • 74: [Matt Cohn] The Human Cost Is Too High // Part 2
    Jun 14 2024
Content warning: suicidal ideation, suicide, substance abuse, substance use disorder, violence, brutality, institutional abuse, child abuse, physical, emotional, mental, and sexual abuse, cults, kidnapping, and the troubled teen industry.

As shared in Part 1 of his story, Matt Cohn is a business professional and musician from Los Angeles, California. His personal history with What Came Next host, Amy, begins in the early 2000s when they were connected through mutual friends. At the time, Matt had just been released from the troubled teen industry, and shared very little of his experiences of abuse. In fact, it wasn't until he watched the 2024 Netflix documentary, The Program: Cons, Cults, and Kidnapping, that he was confronted with the extent of all of the horrors he had seen and faced. Admittedly, it was a validating, eye opening experience for him to watch the documentary. The Broken Cycle Media team is extremely grateful for his candidness today, as well as all of his efforts he's making to change the troubled teen industry.
