  • Could Comedy Be the Cure for COVID-19?
    Jun 29 2020

There has not been an awful lot to laugh about these past few months, and yet, where would we be without the occasional moments of levity about the predicaments of pandemic?

In this episode of the "What Manners Most" podcast, Thomas interviews standup comic and audience warmup man Tom Kelly. A comedian who cut his teeth on shows such as The View and Good Morning America, Kelly reflects on the outlook for a career—and a culture—presently without comedy clubs or studio audiences. What does the future hold for comedians--and for comedy in general, and how will laughter continue to carry us through these unsettling and unprecedented times?

  • Teen Spirit at Its Best
    Jun 16 2020

As society reeled during the days and weeks after the horrific killing of George Floyd, residents of cities and towns everywhere came together in solidarity. After months of staying off the streets due to the pandemic, the citizenry headed out to the streets--for a breath of fresh air, yes, but also seeking a fresh start. Seeking change. Seeking something better than the current normal.

Among those called to do more was high school class of 2020 graduate Jalen Thompson, a young man from O'Fallon, Missouri. Jalen and his friends watched the nationwide rallies with increasing interest before ultimately planning one of their own. Although community support was iffy at first, the numbers the gathering attracted surpassed all predictions. In a show of solidarity, the local police chief marched arm-in-arm with Jalen and his friends, photos of which were shown around the world.

If ever you doubted the power of a small group of teenagers to use their smarts and energy for a higher purpose, this interview with Jalen proves it for certain.
