    Send us a Text Message.

In Part 2 we pick up with special guest, poet and comics writer Anas Abdulhak and talk Tracks 4-15 + the wine pairings!

Anas has written Elutheromania, Objects in the Mirror, and Etheres. We actually featured ETHERES elsewhere on our Substack! a video + a written Q&A with Anas, go search that out. Anas is currently hard at work on the unSEEN/unHEARD Anthology, a comic anthology with stories from new voices from the disability and neurodivergent communities. We mention in the podcast that *maybe* submissions might still be open when these episodes drop, but alas, they did close on June 30th. But that means the work is now underway!

    THE WINES (and/or Not-Wines)
    ANAS' WINE
Domaine Bruno Clair Marsannay Rose, Marsannay-la-Côte, France
A rose of Pinot Noir, 50% macerated for 3-4 days, 50% of the juice was pressed off immediately. Grown on clay-limestone soils in Marsannay-la-Côte.

    DALLAS' WINE

2021 Château Sainte-Marie Les Hauts de Sainte-Marie Blanc, Bordeaux, France
The Les Hauts de Sainte-Marie blanc is a blend of 50% Sauvignon Blanc, 40% Sémillon and 10% Muscadelle. Beautiful aromas of white flowers and wonderful ripe citrus fruits: pink grapefruit, orange, and pomelo. It has a vibrant freshness on the attack that mellows to white peach, apricot and lemon citrus balanced by superb minerality.

    DAVE'S WINE
2020 Zulal Voskehat, Vyots Dzor, Armenia
The Queen of Armenian wines! The name “Voskehat” translates to "golden berry". Notes of honeysuckle, sunflower, lemon zest on the nose. Yellow apple, a hint of pineapple, lemon, and chamomile on the palate. It tastes like the kind of drink you’d have if you were feeling bad, and wanted to feel better. A powerful up-front flavor, but a short, phantom aftertaste to match the album’s ethereal disco quality.

Anas' Choice: DEDICATED by Carly Rae Jepsen. DEDICATED is CRJs 4th Studio Album, after EMOTION, which we covered with screenwriter Mark Palermo in a previous episode. So if you'd like to hear more about her career leading up to DEDICTED, go listen to that ep!

After EMOTION, CRJ wanted to do a "light disco" album, having deep-dove into ABBA's back catalogue. The album's working title was "Songs to Clean Your House To". But ultimately she went another direction, wrote 200+ songs, and finally ended with the 15-track album we know today.

THE MOOR is a new indie horror film, released 7/1/2024 in the UK but still to come for the rest of the world - keep an eye out for it!

The film had its World premiere in the "First Blood" strand of FrightFest, a platform dedicated to debut feature films. It quickly gained recognition as one of the standout entries in its category. Total Film hono(u)red the film with FrightFest's Best Scare award and nominated director Cronin for Best Director.

This British folk horror film is based on true stories about The Moor Murders in the countryside during the 60's. Sophia La Porta stars as Claire, who is approached by the father of her murdered childhood friend to help investigate the haunted moor which he believes to be his long-missing son's final resting place.

    THE WINES
    DAVE'S WINE: (Match)
2019 Triacca Casa La Gatta Valtellina Superiore
Alpine Nebbiolo! Or "Chiavennasca" as those in the northern Lombardy region call it. High acidity + high tannins, bright red fruits with florals and truffle, an absolutely unique expression of Nebbiolo.

    DALLAS' WINE: (Contrast)
Domaine Trapet Beblenheim "BBHM" Riesling 2020
Rich lime, peach, and pear notes, floral hints and a slightly petrol aroma. The palate is equally impressive, with good acidity balancing a full body.

  • Wine and...Books: BENIGHTED by J.B. Priestley (1927)

Benighted is the second novel by J.B. Priestly, both his first and second were published in 1927, though he didn't hit it big with the public until his third novel, The Good Companions which came out in 1929. Benighted was released in the US as "The Old Dark House" which references how it's a deconstruction or summartion of "Old Dark House" stories, a popular subgenre at the time. Similar to how Joss Whedon's CABIN IN THE WOODS was named to be the same for that particular subgenre.

    THE WINES
    DALLAS' WINE:
2018 Chateau Laubespin Le Moulin Medoc
A robust, straightforward Bordeaux, perfect for everyday drinking. It has beautiful notes of acidity, balanced with jammy red and black fruits, cedar and a hint of graphite. Enjoy on its own or with a dark and stormy night.

    DAVE'S NOT-WINE:
    J. Rieger Caffe Amaro
A one-of-a-kind take on coffee liqueurs. Amaro (the Italian word for "bitter") is a category of liqueur characterized by its bitter, herbal, and slightly sweet flavor which stems from the use of botanicals, herbs, and cane syrup. Rated 92 points by the esteemed Ultimate Spirits Challenge, Caffè Amaro is a collaborative spirit with Kansas City-based coffee roasters, Thou Mayest, who selects a single-origin coffee roast to contribute to the flavors the botanicals generate.

Caffé Amaro spends a brief amount of time in a whiskey barrel resulting in a rich, bittersweet flavor that works great in cocktails or can be enjoyed by itself after a meal on a dark and stormy night.

Today's guest is screenwriter KATE REUSCHEL, a wine creative, writer and educator who specializes in Portuguese wine. She writes the Substack SURVIVES ON WINE, which is where I discovered her. KATE'S CHOICE: "La Revancha del Tango" by Gotan Project is an incredible fusion of Argentinian Tango and French electronic dub for an album that made the "1001 Albums You Must Listen To Before You Die" book, and for good reason.

"Gotan" is "Tango" with switched syllables, a common wordplay in Tango lyrics called "el verse". The group was based in Paris, France, consisting of musicians Eduardo Makaroff (Argentinian), Philippe Cohen Solal (French) and Christoph H. Müller (Swiss).

    THE WINES
    KATE'S WINE:
    Phulia 'Desvirttuado' Loureiro White 2021
    Lima, Vinho Verde, Portugal
Phulia are risk takers and love to subvert the norm - hence their Desvirttuado brand - meaning 'distorted' or 'misrepresented'. Here they have aged Loureiro, which is very uncommon in the Vinho Verde, to create something very unique!

Although very uncommon to do so, Loureiro has excellent ageing potential, with its ability to still retain its freshness, fruitiness and florality (is that a word?) The wine is made from a combination of 50% aged in barrel and 50% aged in steel, both for 1 year. Then the bottle is allowed to age another year before it can be drunk.

    DALLAS' WINE:
Bodegas Lopez Vasco Viejo Malbec, 2020
    Mendoza, Argentina
A medium-bodied wine with surprising depth and savory notes for its modest price. It is forward and easygoing offering up an enticing nose of spice box and black cherry. This provides much pleasure and is an ideal barbecue wine. 3 months in French Nancy oak vats ranging in size from 5,000-25,000 liters. Organically farmed.

    DAVE'S WINE:
    Zuccardi "Concreto" Malbec, 2021
    Uco Valley, Argentina
100% Malbec aged in pure, uncoated concrete.
The 2021 Concreto Malbec has to be one of the finest vintages of this wine despite its youth. This is the wine that explains the Zuccardi philosophy without breaking your piggy bank. It is delicious, serious, approachable and has aging potential. What else do you want?

    THE WINES
    Dave's Wine
    M. Chapoutier 2012 Banyuls Traditionnel
Grenache-based Ruby Port-style wine from the Southern Roussillon region in the Rhone. 8% residual sugar, fortified with brandy for a 16% ABV. Medium-intense notes of black plum, currant and cherry with supporting tones of wood spice and fudge. Tannins have mellowed considerably in this 2012 vintage, with full black-fruit flavors that linger long on the close.

    Back-up Wine:
    La Vielle Ferme Red 2021
GSM/Rhone style blend but Cinsault and Carignan heavy, rather than Grenache, so it's merely labeled a red wine of France. Light on its feet with plenty of fruit flavors and layers of fresh green herbs.

    Dallas' Wine
    Denny Bini Frizzante dell'Emilia Buzza
Made from the Spergola and Malvasia di Candia Aromatica grapes, Spergola carries historical reference as the choice bev of powerful noblewomen during the High and Late Middle Ages. Centuries later, it has captured the hearts and minds of Emilia’s bottle-fermented wine pundits and is championed by Denny Bini.

Direct press and fermented in stainless steel tanks, without temperature control. The second fermentation happens in the bottle in the spring and it takes place within 30 to 60 days and adding must from the same vintage.

    THE WINES (and Not-Wines)
    Dave's Wine:
Henri Champliau - Cremant de Bourgogne Rose NV
Proper "cremant" champagne style bubbly from Bourgogne (aka Burgundy.) Yeasty, croissant flavors of champagne mixed with gentle red fruit flavors of strawberry and raspberry. Effervescent, but still soft and approachable.
    TECH SHEET

    Dallas' Not-Wine:
1857 Estate Potato Vodka (Barrel Whiskey)
Whiskey-adjacent, barreled in virgin American white oak from the Adirondacks with medium char. Smokiness with butter pecan and slated caramel. Technically a whiskey but they can't call it that. Long and succulent with insane toasty notes.

    Mark's Not-Wine:
    Crush Cream Soda (red)
    Cocktail recipes with Cream Soda
Only available in Canada - sorry, non-Canadians! (Though just go buy normal cream soda, it tastes the same, give or take.) The sweet, creamy, semi-adult flavors of cream soda with a pop of bright red color. Add alcohol as desired.
