  • Interview: Dann Read and Emily Read from Pro-Wrestling: EVE
    Jul 3 2021

(Repost of an episode of the Holy Shoot podcast from early 2020)

Back in 2019-2020 when working on the Women Love Wrestling anthology I was also a part of Holy Shoot - A Wrestling Podcast team. I used this platform to share some of the interviews conducted for the book, one of which was a 90 minute discussion with Emily Read and Dann Reed of Pro-Wrestling: EVE.

Both Emily and Dann were in fine form when I interviewed them in the run-up to Wrestle Queendom 3 back in January 2020.  Interview topics include:

    • What is Pro-Wrestling: EVE
    • Why Does EVE matter?
    • Training at EVE Academy and encouraging women to be loud and physical
    • How training is different for women compared to men
    • How and why Pro-Wrestling: EVE obtain mainstream media attention
    • Helping wrestlers develop characters with move sets and promos that make sense for them
    • The history of Pro-Wrestling: EVE over the past 10 years that led up to Wrestle Queendom 3
    • How the 1st Wrestle Queendom, Europe's largest ever all-female event, came to be
    • Women's wrestling being ignored by most wrestling sites
    • Stories about Nina Samuels, Charlie Morgan, Rhea O'Reilly and Cara Noir

I've kept the interview in its original form, including the delightful Nina Samuels insulting everyone and my summary of the interview and Women Love Wrestling project (before we became this website), followed by the full interview.

  • An Academic Study of Wrestling (Independent, Women, Intergender & Hardcore) with Jacqui Pratt PhD
    Oct 4 2020

    Special Interview Episode (episode 10)

This episode features Jacqui Pratt, talented academic and wrestling writer, plus lead singer in awesome wrestling themed band Cheap Pop. Jac wrote about wrestling as part of her PhD, appears weekly on the PWTorch Bruce Mitchell Audio Show, and sings kickass punk songs about wrestling

Jacqui recently  completed her PhD on Rhetoric and Composition, and while that may seem like a funny subject to discuss on a wrestling podcast, trust us you are going to love this nerdy discussion. This will help you see independent, hardcore, women's and intergender wrestling in a whole new light. She  shares her work analysing the famous World Cutest Tag Team vs The Young Bucks match from PWG, Candice's crimson mask and all, that combines all 4 topics.

(Cards on the table time:   We recorded this back in 2019 before Speaking Out. At the time Joey Ryan was a respected performer thought to be playing a sleazy character, Unfortunately it turns out he was in real life a sleazy character. I don't think this changes the analysis Jacqui did or the themes covered, but please know we would not be talking about Joey in this way if the interview took place today. We are mainly talking about Candice LeRae and storytelling.

Jac also chats about her band Cheap Pop, their badass In Gorilla album, and we end with an exclusive preview of her song Mean Gene. You can follow Jac at https://twitter.com/cheappopisaband

  • Jacqui Pratt's 4 Horsewomen (PhD, rock star, PWTorch podcaster, writer)
    Sep 4 2020
s01e09 - Jacqui Pratt presents her 4 Horsewomen (last episode in this series) Every week on 4 Horsewomen a new guest will reveal their stable of 4 badass women. These are their greatest of all time, picked from the all time history of the sport. Jazz, Mae Young and Bull Nakano led by Becky Lynch? Sure, why not.  This episode features Jacqui Pratt, in our view the smartest person covering wrestling today. Jac wrote about wrestling as part of her PhD on rhetoric and composition, appears weekly on the PWTorch Bruce Mitchell Audio Show, and sings kickass punk songs about wrestling with her band Cheap Pop. She also writes about women's wrestling for https://BellToBelles.com/ while she covered the subject of 'othering' women in professional wrestling for a chapter in the Women Love Wrestling book.  In this final episode of our miniseries Jacqui focuses on what WWE should do if they decided to embrace the idea of the 4 Horsewomen stable right now.
