  • Summary

  • Hitler needed the Ploiesti oil fields in Romania for his later invasion of the Soviet Union. In 1940, the German-Romanian Oil and Arms Treaty was signed. Germany mediated the conflict between Hungary and Romania. As the Romanian people revolted, King Carol II passed the crown to his son Michael, and General Antonescu called in German troops. On 12 October 1940, German troops landed in Bucharest. Frustrated by this diplomatic misunderstanding, Mussolini invaded Greece from Albania on 28 October 1940. But the Greeks not only resisted the attack, but by December occupied one-third of Albania. In addition, British troops landed in Crete. Turkey also mobilized troops.
