In this episode we analyze the origins and rise of Yemen’s Houthi rebels. Delving into the group’s Zaidi religious roots and early grievances, we trace their journey from a peaceful revivalist movement to battle-hardened militia. Now at the helm in much of northern Yemen, the Houthisrule with an iron fist even as they wage war with internal and external foes. We conclude that understanding armed groups like the Houthis provides insight into Yemen’s strife - and paths not taken toward peace.
