  • Season 3 Episode 6
    Jul 16 2023

Mathieu and Michele are getting dolled up for the last episode of Season Three! That’s right dear valued listener, in this episode our hosts are exploring the fascinating evolution of makeup. Mathieu takes us back to its traceable origins in ancient Egypt, where both men and women embraced cosmetics for practical and religious purposes. He also explores how they used the natural resources around them to create things like eyeliner and blush! We find out how the attitude about makeup shifted so drastically in society, and then about its rapid commercialisation in the golden age of Hollywood thanks to the world’s newest marketing tool - the Starlett!

Michelle takes us through makeup's more modern history, including the harming effects that unattainable beauty standards forged from magazines had on women. But it’s not all doom and gloom! With the rise of social media, everyone is empowered to express themselves through makeup, find inspiration from across the globe and break free from the traditional norms of makeup. Well, almost everyone…their special guest Coral Bleach who happens to wander in when Michelle leaves the room and tries to sell Mathieu her latest makeup wares seems to like the norms just fine.
