"The Cask of Amontillado" is Edgar Allan Poe's short but enigmatic masterpiece. Set in an unnamed Italian city, we hear the story of how Montresor lures Fortunato through the catacombs into the Montresor family vault and there chains him up and bricks him in for eternity. Why he does it we will never know, but he does so with a casual savagery that is truly chilling.

Montressor, angry over insults by his friend Fortunato, a fellow nobleman, plots to murder him during Carnival when the man is drunk, by immurement, sealing him up alive behind walls of bricks. He baits Fortunato by telling him he has obtained, out of season, what he believes to be a pipe of Amontillado, about 130 gallons, a rare and valuable sherry wine. He wants his friend's expert opinion on the subject. Unaware of Montresor's true intent Fortunato leaves with him for the wine cellars of the latter's palazzo.

First published in the November 1846 issue of Godey's Lady's Book, the story is set in 19th century Italy and concerns the deadly revenge taken by the insane narrator on a friend he claims has insulted him. Like several of Poe's stories, and in keeping with the 19th century fascination with the subject, the narrative revolves around a person being buried alive.

This production is a full-cast audio dramatization (with incredible original music and magnificent sound effects) of one of the most revered stories of revenge in literary history. This adaptation takes a unique look into the crime itself and establishes a fresh perspective on why Montresor is recounting the story at all.
