“Kept me frantically turning the pages and somehow made me cry at the end . . . Brava!”—Kristin Hannah, author of The Women

“Melds tense suspense with a powerful exploration of devotion, obsession, and love.”—People (Best New Books)

1975 is a time of change in America. The Vietnam War is ending. Muhammad Ali is fighting Joe Frazier. And in the small town of Monta Clare, Missouri, girls are disappearing.

When the daughter of a wealthy family is targeted, the most unlikely hero emerges—Patch, a local boy, who saves the girl, and, in doing so, leaves heartache in his wake.

Patch and those who love him soon discover that the line between triumph and tragedy has never been finer. And that their search for answers will lead them to truths that could mean losing one another.

A missing person mystery, a serial killer thriller, a love story, a unique twist on each, Chris Whitaker has written a novel about what lurks in the shadows of obsession and the blinding light of hope.

Critic reviews

All the Colors of the Dark kept me reading until 2:30 a.m.—the turns just kept coming. This is literary fiction that works as a crime thriller. The deadpan humor is pitch-perfect, the plot cinematic.”Boston Globe

“Breathless . . . the story ripples out, spanning decades and perspectives, to consider how one moment transforms the lives of a little boy and the people who love him.”The Washington Post

“Sure to bring suspense to the beach!”US Weekly

Amazing

I have read this book twice now and I am just as amazed the second time around. This book is funny, dramatic, suspenseful, everything all in one, and is perfectly written in my opinion. The narration is spot on as well. If more than five stars were possible I would give them without a double, absolutely and completely.

Outstanding

Any time I see Eduardo Ballerini as narrator I know there’s a great listen ahead. The beautiful story with all its joys and sorrows is brought to indelible life by the incredibly executed narration.

Loved the complex characters, the way it unraveled. I'll seek out more books by this author now.

A gift to readers

We Begin at the End is one of my favorite books of all time. Seeing that another book was to release I sat on the edge of my seat waiting to read. Not disappointed one bit. I feel as if I know these characters. Feel the struggles and pains that they do. Wish I could step into the pages and help them as best I could. Thank you for writing this story. There is always hope even in the darkest of moments and longest of days.

Keep Listening

I enjoyed the book once I finally got into it. A bit hard to follow at the beginning if you aren’t listening well enough. Worth the wait.

A captivating journey

I loved the many interwoven stories of each of the flawed characters in this book. The many short chapters gave only the slightest bit away, little by little, to keep you intrigued throughout. I will miss these characters and their stories spanning many years. Even though I wanted to get to the rest of the story, I didn’t want it to end.

Fabulous!

This is the best I have listened to in ages. Reminds me a bit of Where the Crawdads Sing.
