About this listen

A supernatural swarm. A treacherous scheme. A tinker's apprentice may be the village's only hope....

Book 1: Steamborn

Jacob has yet to meet a gadget he couldn't fix or an adventure he couldn't resist. With trade routes to his remote Lowlands town cut off, Jacob must exchange his boyhood adventures for petty theft. After all, his wages at the tinker shop aren't enough to pay for his father's medicine.

But it soon becomes clear why few merchants brave the nearby roads as a plague of terrifying creatures descends upon the town. With the Lowlands under siege, Jacob and his friend have no choice but to run for their lives. When their escape uncovers a terrible secret, Jacob learns there are those who'll stop at nothing to make sure the teen takes the scandal to his grave....

Steamborn is an inventive YA fantasy novel with a heavy dash of steampunk. If you like dystopian settings, killer insects, and resourceful characters, then you'll love Eric Asher's gear-turning tale.

Book 2: Steamforged

There are old wounds in the forgotten places of the world, and some are soaked in blood.

Jacob and his allies flee into the Deadlands after the fall of Ancora. Charles, the enigmatic smith, hopes to find answers in the desert city of Bollwerk that could prevent a war.

Their enemies are many, and here Jacob will learn the cost of life in the Deadlands.

Book 3: Steamsworn

The world dies in war only to be reborn. It is the way of things, and always will be.

Forged in the Deadlands crucible, and armed with the knowledge of their true enemy, Jacob, Alice, and their allies bring the fight back to Ancora. The wounds cut deep in their darkest hour, but in the end, vengeance will light their path.

This collection includes Steamborn, Steamforged, and Steamsworn. Grab it and crank up a whimsical thrill-ride today!

Listen to these books now and you'll thank me late

I've read a lot of steampunk over the years and I think I can honestly say that the Steamborn trilogy is by far some of the best I've ever read or listened to. I made the mistake of starting this audiobook at work and I then proceeded to listen to it in 3 consecutive 9 hour days in which I got absolutely nothing productive done at work.

While I loved just about everything about this series there are a few things that really stick out about it to me First is how much detail Eric Asher manages to put into every character, no matter how small and unimportant they may seem. I also love that instead of long and rambling explanations of the world and technology we get to see everything explained through the characters actions. I think it really makes the story flow a lot better and doesn't bog things down too much in details we really don't need to know.

Though I think the one thing that makes this audiobook stand out the most is Saskia Maarleveld's narration. I honestly can't think of another narrator I know of who can pack so much emotion into their narration and make you want to laugh, cry, or scream along with the characters throughout the entire book. I'm also surprised by just how consistent she manages to be the entire trilogy. I had no problem telling who every character is from their voice alone as she never once falters with their voices and accents. I can only wonder how I've never managed to listen to any of her books before this.

So yeah..listen to this audiobook now and you can thank me later.

Meh

After all the great reviews I was expecting a lot from these books. I was left feeling pretty meh. I did finish them and it kept my attention. Barely. Nothing really struck me as exceptional. I definitely liked the Vesik better. The narrator did a decent job.

Enjoyed the story more and more as it progressed

By the end of book three I found myself wanting to know what comes next in this world.
The build up throughout the series is fantastic.

I found myself having a tough time with the Audiobook Reader at times. I’m not sure if it’s the accent or something else. While she did a good job differentiating the voices of the characters, I found my mind wandering more than normal and had to back up and re-listen to sections more frequently than I’m accustomed to. Great stories...good production.

Reads like a 90s rpg.

Standard hero with standard love interest goes on an adventure from town to town picking up all the archetype friends on the way, all the time fighting off monsters in between.

Maybe just not for me

This series had some very interesting ideas, but over all it fell flat for me. Pacing issues in every book, a focus on technology with very weak explanations, and a war that never really gets much explanation. Deus ex machina solutions also cropped up far too often. This is a hard one to recommend even if the world itself seemed interesting. The reader did a great job though.

At least it's steampunk

Narrator seemed like she was whispering the whole time, which made the whole thing "meh"

A thrilling series!

Book 1
As I was having withdrawals from Asher’s Vesik Series I decided to give his Steamborn Trilogy a shot. Steamborn by Eric R. Asher is my first foray into the steampunk genre. I have previously tried to read books in this genre but found they didn’t hold my attention and the mechanics were difficult to envision. Not the case with this one! The story is exciting and the mechanics and in-depth descriptions make it very easy to envision the tools, machines, and creatures. This brought the story to life for me.

Before diving in, you need to be committed to reading a trilogy. Book 1 lays the foundation of the Ancora society while filling in the back story on a few of the key players, and thus laying the groundwork for the underhanded dealings of the government in the Highlands and the point to the story. Once it really got rolling along, it ended. Nothing is really resolved in book 1 but there again it is a trilogy.

The narrator, Saskia Maarleveld, does an outstanding job lending a unique voice to each character. The narration helped me to connect to the characters and it brought the story leaping from my speakers.

I am looking forward to diving into Book 2!

Book 2
After the ending in book 1, I dove right into book 2! The series is quite fast paced and filled with action. The characters are fascinating! And the narrator...she is bloody brilliant!

Book 3
Such a fitting end to the series. It is bittersweet bidding farewell to the characters that I spent the last month with. (I listened to all 3 audiobooks.)

The final installment was an edge of your seat, white knuckle, thrill ride of emotion for me. Eric Asher is a phenomenal writer who spun me into this beautiful tale of family, love, vengeance, and war. The narrator was amazing!

great steampunk, Y.A. safe series also!

terrific book and trilogy the villains villainous the heroes heroic The Angst kept to an acceptable minimum and it made sense when the author used it. Great continuity in character development and consistent behaviour according to the characters beliefs . Great job with the narration, did not bring attention to itself, only enhanced the whole. very much recommend this series for anyone.

Cool Light Steampunk

The reader is splendid, the story is fun and straightforward. Could have benefited from grit.
