About this listen
The Fifth Season: Booktrack Edition adds an immersive musical soundtrack to your audiobook listening experience!
At the end of the world, a woman must hide her secret power and find her kidnapped daughter in this "intricate and extraordinary" (The New York Times) Hugo Award-winning novel of power, oppression, and revolution.
This is the way the world ends...for the last time.
It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world's sole continent, spewing ash that blots out the sun. It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter. It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester.
This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy.
Listen to the first book in the critically acclaimed, three-time Hugo award-winning trilogy by NYT best-selling author N. K. Jemisin.
Booktrack is an immersive format that pairs traditional audiobook narration to complementary music. The tempo and rhythm of the score are in perfect harmony with the action and characters throughout the audiobook. Gently playing in the background, the music never overpowers or distracts from the narration, so listeners can enjoy every minute. When you purchase this Booktrack edition, you receive the exact narration as the traditional audiobook available, with the addition of music throughout.
PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying PDF will be available in your Audible Library along with the audio.

Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them. With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success.

Story
Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

It has been 20 years since the end of the war. The dictatorial Augurs, once thought of almost as gods, were overthrown and wiped out during the conflict, their much-feared powers mysteriously failing them. Those who had ruled under them, men and women with a lesser ability known as the Gift, avoided the Augurs' fate only by submitting themselves to the rebellion's Four Tenets.

1828. Robin Swift, orphaned by cholera in Canton, is brought to London by the mysterious Professor Lovell. There, he trains for years in Latin, Ancient Greek, and Chinese, all in preparation for the day he’ll enroll in Oxford University’s prestigious Royal Institute of Translation—also known as Babel. Babel is the world's center for translation and, more importantly, magic. Silver working—the art of manifesting the meaning lost in translation using enchanted silver bars—has made the British unparalleled in power, as its knowledge serves the Empire’s quest for colonization.

I tell them I was orphaned after a tragic accident three years ago, and that good fortune alone has led to my acceptance into their most prestigious school. I tell them that once I graduate, I will gladly join the rest of civilized society in allowing my strength, my drive, and my focus—what they call Will—to be leeched away and added to the power of those above me, as millions already do. As all must eventually do.

Udo's biggest problem isn't being a digger (that's low class), or staying drunk (that's damn expensive), or avoiding the Dwergaz (they're monsters), or even pissing off the supposed Gods. It's that his reality...well, it isn't what he thought. And now, he can't even afford to drink because his so-called friend Nicz is cutting into his business, digging up tin, iron, and copper. So Udo forms a new plan: clay. After all, clay jars are used to store everything: meat, herbs, and, his personal favorite, ale.

A masterpiece of world building and storytelling. So many can get lost in world building and ignore characters or vice versa. This builds deep characters and a deep world at the same time.

Slightly odd way of storytelling
The story was amazing with two odd twists, and leaves a great cliff hanger. I would be upset if there weren't already more books out.
I only noticed one mistake from the narrator, of the whole audiobook, a mispronunciation of one word.
Not really a story for kids in the slightest bit, and plenty of allusion within it. If you aren't paying any attention, you will miss a lot.

I need to read more Jemisin
I don't know what got me to but this book, but I had it for a while and was hesitant. now, after reading it, I need to read more. the characters and world are so rich. The shocking bits are shocking for the right reasons. it's adult fantasy without trying too hard. At first I want sure about some of the prose style. the word choice didn't grab me, but one I got it I was hooked. 100% recommended, especially if you're tired of Western European fantasy style.

Shockingly Outstanding
The book folds like origami; line by line revealing plot lines with stunning episodic crescendos and twists. The author’s writing style fondly brings to mind Bone People by Keri Hulme. This is a great compliment.
Sci fi at its lyrical best. Operatic scope of time as explained from the perspective of half a lifetime. It conveys a Grand Canyon’s worth of ideas and peoples.
Utterly brilliant.

OH, WOW
There are no words to describe the sheer beauty of this book. N.K. Jemisin is an author I've only recently learned of, and I have to say, so far, this is the best piece of fiction I've ever had the pleasure of engaging with. And the narration + the book track... Robin Miles is easily one of the most beautiful voices I've ever had the pleasure of listening to.
So. F'NG. GOOD.

One of the best series
This is probably one of the best series I’ve ever read. You need to read it. Also the narrator is great.

love it!
I never knew how much I needed representation in fantasy. This feeds a neglected piece of me.

Can’t wait to read the rest of the series
I wanted to read NK Jemisin’s work after seeing her on masterclass. I didn’t quite know what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed the story, her ability to build worlds and how the different perspectives came together. The narrator was excellent as well!
