About this listen

In the spirit of Mindy Kaling, Kelly Oxford, and Sarah Silverman, a compulsively listenable and outrageously funny memoir of growing up as a fish out of water, finding your voice, and embracing your inner crazy person from popular actress, writer, and comedian Bonnie McFarlane.

It took Bonnie McFarlane a lot of time, effort, and tequila to get to where she is today. Before she starred on Last Comic Standing and directed her own films, she was an inappropriately loud tomboy growing up on her parents' farm in Cold Lake, Canada, wetting her pants during standardized tests, and killing chickens. Desperate to find "her people" - like-minded souls who wouldn't judge her because she was honest, ruthless, and, okay, sometimes really rude - Bonnie turned to comedy.

In her explosively funny and no-holds-barred memoir, Bonnie tells it like it is and lays bare all of her smart (and not-so-smart) decisions along her way to finding her friends and her comedic voice. From fistfights in elementary school to riding motorcycles to the World Famous Comic Strip to Late Night with David Letterman and through to her infamous C word bit on Last Comic Standing, You're Better than Me is her funny and outrageous trip through the good, bad, and ugly of her life in comedy. McFarlane doesn't always keep her mouth shut when she should, but at least she makes people laugh. And that's all that matters, right?

Very funny

I was driving around wasting time so I could keep listening. It's dumb that this review had to be a minimum of 15 words.

Easy and Fun Listening

Pretty funny story. Held my attention the whole time. The ending was kind of abrupt. I thought she could have added more to the story. I'd recommend this.

Wonderful. Humble.

What does Bonnie McFarlane and Alexander Cendese bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I couldn't have heard the correct tone in her telling of any of her experiences.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The kitten. Bonnie's heart shows throughout the whole book but Hollywood's rescue really moved me.

Any additional comments?

I bought this book with no expectations as I didn't know much about the author. I loved the way she narrated, the things she shared about the things we all have inside of us but can't say out loud, and I especially loved hearing about her childhood...that she got the gift that many of us missed out on-old school values and a foundation that teaches through example about how to work hard for what one has. It teaches us to appreciate what matters. She's so honest and humble. Still a real person even after 'making it big'. I'm a new fan.

Funny and entertaining

A great book for fans of comedy. Bonnie is the best. She's a great writer, and she is a great narrator, with a nice voice that made listening to her talk for 7+ hrs an enjoyable experience. My Wife Hates Me is a fun podcast if you're a fan of her; new episodes every (almost) Friday.

New favorite!

I absolutely love this book. And I'm so glad I got it as an audiobook where I got to hear Bonnie read it. Her narration adds to the story. Very funny, but it also inspired me. She works her butt off and has faced circumstances that would make most give up. She isn't preachy and doesn't brag. She just tells it as it is from a perspective of someone who is used to obstacles. Now when I deal with difficulty, I just think "Bonnie did it and she grew up without running water, so I got this".

Totally Rad, Man. The bomb!

I love this book and I love the young woman who wrote it.
I'm lucky to be able to call Bonnie a friend and the word 'proud' doesn't even begin to share how I feel about her and this book. Another word could be 'bullshit!' - even though I know Bonnie very well and I'm profoundly aware of how funny she is - I can't believe she actually wrote the whole thing! By herself! Congratulations! Any reader or listener is in for a treat - Bonnie shares her humor, he life and her talent with us in "You're Better Than Me". Awesome.

Funny, poignant.

I like Bonnie's candor and wit. She describes dark places with humor, not dwelling on the bad.
