Publisher's summary

Through hard work and, well, tenacity, Jack Black and Kyle Gass catapulted themselves into rock superstardom. But before they were the only two members of the best rock band on earth, they were just Jack and Kyle, two theater students finding their footing in Los Angeles.

The D’s trajectory was a slow and steady rise from clubs to a guest spot on the hit show Mr. Show on HBO to albums to film to headlining festivals across the globe. But it wasn’t without its pains. This is their story.

These are their Words + Music.

In addition to seven newly recorded catalog songs exclusive to this volume, Tenacious D: The Road to Redunktion features 30 years of never-before-heard archival audio, bringing to life every anecdote with a docu-quality that places listeners right then and there. What’s unexpected is just how sweet it is to spend two hours with two true friends, both monstrously talented, delighting in their creativity and their unlikely journey from the living room to the stars.

About the Creator and Performer

Jack Black and Kyle Gass make up the Greatest Band in the World: Tenacious D. They started playing together in Kyle’s apartment in Los Angeles. No one could have ever dreamed of where the band’s genius would take them, but take them it did.
The band had a variety series on HBO that aired in 1999. Their self-titled album was released on Epic Records in the fall of 2001 and was quickly certified at Gold-selling status, and has since gone Platinum. The duo completed their first feature film together, The Pick of Destiny, which was released in 2006. The album Rize of the Fenix followed in 2012, receiving a Grammy nomination for Best Comedy Album. In 2014, they won a Grammy in the category of Best Metal Performance for their cover of Ronnie James Dio’s "The Last In Line." In 2018, they released the album Post-Apocalypto and the animated film Tenacious D in Post-Apocalypto, with each frame hand-drawn by Black and voiced by Black and Gass. In 2020 came the final piece to the Post-Apocalypto universe: the graphic novel.

Discover memoirs and essay collections, scripted podcasts, and even—in the case of our winner—a documentary series. The protean nature of this list makes sense for comedy, because there’s humor just about everywhere and in everything if you’re looking for it. Sometimes that humor is just plain silliness, but sometimes that humor gets down to the core of what it means to be a person—a way to make sense of the bumps and bruises we get along the way.

Stop whatcha doin’

Cuz Audible is about to ruin,
The words and the music,
That ya used to.

Somebody Told Me,
these two were Juke Box Heroes.
Or perhaps, they’re American Idiots.
Or, proudly, both?
They’re not vicious, or malicious
Just de-lovely and delicious.

Parental note: lots of F bombs, drug talk, and Kyle’s Beavis/Butthead chuckle.

A must for any D fan

I laughed. I cried. I sang at the top of my lungs.

This was like listening to a conversation between some of my old friends. I am utterly at a loss for words regarding how much I enjoyed it.

I also need a full orchestra cover album.

- Hellacious T (not the side project, just a badass)

Super funny!

I really enjoyed the Pick of Destiny. I was introduced to the D back when they were producing their first album, and have been a mega fan since. Both of my offspring are also huge fans. I was sad to hear about Kyle's drug problems, but it helps to keep it real. they are the best!

Amazing – no surprise

Love the narration directly from the band and their passion in carefully together as well as the music and the fun. It was wonderful that they were willing to be so open with their fans and the public - you guys rocked it all the way through.
