Publisher's summary

NOW AN APPLE ORIGINAL SERIES FROM APPLE TV+ STARRING JAKE GYLLENHAAL

From #1 New York Times bestselling author and hailed as the most suspenseful and compelling novel in decades, this story brings to life our worst nightmare: that of an ordinary citizen facing conviction for the most terrible of all crimes.

Rusty Sabich, family man and the number-two prosecutor of Kindle County, is handed an explosive case—the brutal murder of a woman who happens to be his former lover. A shocking turn of events suddenly transforms him from the accuser into the accused... and plunges him into a nightmare world where nothing seems real and no one can be PRESUMED INNOCENT.

It's the stunning portrayal of one man's all-too-human, all-consuming fatal attraction for a passionate woman who is not his wife, and the story of how his obsession puts everything he loves and values on trial—including his own life. It's a book that lays bare a shocking world of betrayal and murder, as well as the hidden depths of the human heart. And it will hold you and haunt you...long after you have reached its shattering conclusion.

Great Book

I couldn't wait for my commute to school and home again. This was my first audio book and I made an excellent choice. Can't wait to listen to the sequel (my next selection) Edward Hermann did an excellent job narrating. I hated to turn off my Ipod, I understand it was made into a movie and the book is old. The story line in the book is not dated. Kept me guessing. Do yourself a favor and listen to this book if you like who done its!

Excellent

An excellent reader for an enthralling book. This book is better than most legal thrillers because of the verisimilitude not only of the courtroom scenes but of the protagonists' thoughts and fears. Written more than 20 years ago but does not seem dated. Probably the best "legal thriller" I've listened to from many at Audible.

Don't care but can't stop thinking about it

What do I do with this? The story and characters are jarring, exploring the depths of human fallibility, darkness and brokenness. There is nothing redemptive here. Yet several days later I can't stop thinking about the novel.

In the end I don't really care for any of the characters and as a first novel the writing has several faults - too much repetition of words, the planting of circumstances to be unraveled later is much too obvious, the narrative drags along painfully for hours (I expected Perry Mason and wound up with eight solid hours of The Days Of Our Lives before even getting to a trial), the story is told first person by a truly pathetic character, and at the end there is no payoff of some deep moral truth, a redeeming quality or something to admire & care for in the characters. No payoff whatsoever.

And yet I can't stop thinking about the novel.

Excellent novel.

A simply marvellous novel by a fantastic novelist. Initially, i had some concerns that the narrator just did not have the right tone. Too smarmy, too slow. But increasing the speed by 25% made it much better. Am off to sequel.

Slow Start- Great End

I almost put this one down for good. The beginning was a little slow, and I don't know if it was the book or the narrator.

In the end I'm so glad I stuck with it. The end is fantastic not leaving any questions unanswered.

You will enjoy this one.

Great story, but over use of profanity

The story and characters were very well developed. Plot was fascinating and held my interest throughout. Narrator was outstanding. The only issue I had was with the excessive profanity. It just became annoying and tiresome.

Smart, Sexy, and Twisted

This was a pretty genius book. It's hard to say too much without giving away the whole book. If you like mystery, twists, intrigue, deception, and overall craziness, this is the book for you!

Excellent, absolutely brilliant

This book was the best murder mystery I have read in a long, long time. Well written and well performed this book was hard to put down. My next book will be by Scott Turow, he has earned it.

Presumed Innocent review

Author gets a little too carried away w describing details making the book very long, but the reader was fantastic - especially with all the different voices for different characters.
