Siu sits down with Rick Doblin, the founder and executive director of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS), and renowned physician and thinker Gabor Maté, MD. And at the end of this particular exploration, Siu comes to envision and outline a holistic and more human approach to healing, connecting, and expanding.

About the Host - Will Siu, MD

About the Host

Will Siu, MD, DPhil, completed medical and graduate school at UCLA and the University of Oxford, respectively, before training as a psychiatrist at Harvard Medical School. He remained on the faculty at Harvard for two years prior to moving to New York City to further pursue his interest in psychedelic medicine as a practitioner, educator, speaker, and writer. Dr. Siu has been trained by MAPS (the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies) to provide MDMA-assisted therapy and maintains a private practice in New York City where he provides individual psychotherapy and manages medications.
He approaches his work with the goal of lasting, patient-centered healing—using his skills and experience to help his clients find healing within themselves. As part of that process, Dr. Siu manages psychiatric medication—including medication discontinuation for those who are ready—and provides integrative psychotherapy. For interested patients, this involves energetic and spiritual work and, in some cases, ketamine-assisted psychotherapy. He also offers integration services for those who have experienced ayahuasca, LSD, psilocybin, or MDMA.

Editorial Review

Self-care with a soul (and shrooms)
A couple of years ago, our well-being editor Rachael and I were chatting about how the growing backlash to self-care opened up a discussion around how invisible societal forces like capitalism and racism erode our collective mental health. We never quite figured out what to call this shift—anticapitalist wellness? Systemic well-being?—but “Healing in a Sick Society” hits it bang on the head. This second installment of the new audio series The goop Pursuit features insight from Gabor Maté, the bestselling author and physician who has long explored the links between illness and culture, and Rick Doblin, founder of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies. But the program’s heart is host Will Siu, a psychiatrist who digs deep into how his own mental health struggles have been both unaddressed and amplified by the medical establishment. His compassionate and authentic approach creates a soothing space for absorbing the many “aha” moments within. —Kat J., Audible Editor

Edit out the music, please!

Excellent podcast. I am a fan of consciousness literature and didn't know of Dr Will Siu so this was a good introduction to him, specifically. I was pleasantly surprised to hear so much from Dr Gabor Mate as well whom I am very familiar with and is always great. Content here is top notch.

Unfortunately, the background music was highly distracting and totally unnecessary. Not sure why it was added throughout the entire podcast. Music for the intro and outro, sure, that's fine, but competing with the guests and narrator the entire time made no sense.

The most comfortable podcast ever!!

Wow! Just wow! I struggle A LOT with migraines and headaches so I seldom listen to podcasts/audiobooks, they are triggering and tiering for my head. But this one, mmm. Such a comfortable listen! The voice of Will Siu is so comforting.
And then to the content 😆
That was great too! Loved the switching dialogue between the three men and the woman.
A lot of the information resonated with me. I liked this a lot.

Toward Healing

Hearing Siu’s healing journey is genuinely moving and inspires me to open to a new level of understanding. My only criticism is that I wish it was longer…

Trauma healing truth

You are so correct regarding the empathic witness, which I call the sacred witness, and that key aspect in the healing process with trauma

Healing one at a time

I really liked the concepts and ideas. The delivery was dry and I had to speed up to 1.2x and it was still hard to stay engaged in some areas. I would have liked more personality and character to shine through.

Healing In A Sick Society

Very rare that you hear psychiatrist and physicians of Dr. Will Siu and Dr. Gabor Maté’s caliber share deeply personal history regarding their own lives. As someone who is healing from over a decade of childhood sexual/violent abuse, their own personal traumatic experiences resonate very much with my own in how the trauma manifested. Their candid openness helps to inspire so many others in their healing journeys, including my own. I would love to hear Dr. Will Siu host a series on this topic of “Healing In A Sick Society”. These kinds of conversations are continuously needed. Thank you for this episode.🙏🏾
