Publisher's summary

Parley P. Pratt wrote A Voice of Warning over a two-month period while on a mission to New York. The economy in Kirtland was collapsing, and dissension was rife among Church members. Even Parley became caught up in the dissension and was for a time estranged to Joseph Smith. In an act of renewal, Parley went to New York to preach the gospel and purify himself. With few doors open to him, Parley focused himself on writing, producing A Voice of Warning. At first, few took notice of the work, but in time it became the most important of all Mormon missionary tracts of the 19th century and was eventually published in more than 30 English editions and several non-English versions.

The eventual impact of A Voice of Warning was profound. In 1870, the Mormon dissident Edward Tullidge commented, “Ask the people what brought them into the church, and you would hear from every direction Parley Pratt’s Voice of Warning.” One Latter-day Saint diarist of the 19th century observed, “We had every encouragement to read the Church publications: A Voice of Warning; the Pearl of Great Price; and Key to Theology.” That these two of Parley Pratt’s writings would be on the same footing as the Pearl of Great Price, canonized in 1880, indicates the special status these works held among early Church leaders and members.

In 1864, A Voice of Warning was one of two works Brigham Young recommended to a correspondent for an overview of Mormon doctrine. And in 1875, A Voice of Warning was the first title mentioned in the Church’s Deseret News list of books worth reading. Parley Pratt’s A Voice of Warning continues to be worthwhile today, providing the modern listener a powerful and persuasive witness regarding the restored gospel of Jesus Christ.

Inspirational!

Love learning how the greatest missionary in modern times helped teach with the Spirit. The ideas and concepts aren't new, but its very refreshing to see how he presented them.

Gossip al? gos·pel /ˈɡäspəl/

For such an informative book it’s strange the reader mispronounces gos·pel
/ˈɡäspəl/.
A thousand times.
That was the strangest part of this book🍄
Other than that, very interesting to me.

Narrator must be considerate

Narrator must be more considerate.

Narration speed is too rapid! Needs to intersperse reflective pauses, to emphasize key concepts, and allow listeners to consider points addressed, not just at end of chapters.

Inspiring and Profound

I read this book years ago and forgotten it’s beauty and wisdom. Every page has a wise thought to ponder and share. Parley Pratt was a spiritual giant with an elegant vocabulary and skill with language. Everyone would benefit from this inspiring book of history, discovery and deep wisdom on the works and purposes of God.

Great overview of the LDS faith.

I can’t recommend this book enough. The clear and profound doctrine taught that will benefit both new and longtime seekers of truth.

Great Content, Horrible Delivery

Very much enjoyed the historical and doctrinal content. The readers however couldn't have done worse... pronunciation errors, stacato delivery totally ignoring phrasing, and thus obscuring meaning. I'd very much like to see this redone by someone who knows how to read well.

Worst Narrator

To have someone with Parley’s masterful command of the English language narrated by the barely literate jack wagon responsible for this disaster piece is I think the most disgraceful thing that could have been done to the man posthumously. I spent more time cringing than anything else while listening to this bumpkin limp through Parleys thoughts. He sounds like a 6 yr old who is given a script written by an adult to read. I would have my 16 yr old son read this aloud with 100% confidence that he would do a better job. Do yourself a favor and buy the book and read this on your own.

Valuable content. Weird reading.

I don’t know how these guys were hired to read these books, or if they just decided to take on these books without copyright to make a buck off the Mormons, but all of the readings are mispronounced and have artifacts like clearing of throats and rereading without editing. This should be free. If you are going to pay, do it on Deseret Book and get a quality version by people who know how to pronounce “gospel”. All of the Pratt books on Audible are done by these characters. Just a “Warning”.

Poor Narration

Good book, but poorly narrated. Almost sounded like a computer. Little voice inflection and often choppy.
