Story
In the first century of its existence, Christianity was both welcomed and vilified throughout the Roman Empire. Many of Christianity's original adherents were martyred. Christians themselves practiced their religion with great diversity, linked as much to local influences as theology. Political intrigue, theological beliefs, and simple misunderstandings created a need for dialogue between the many practitioners of the growing faith.

Israel conjures up myriad associations for peoples of all cultures and religious backgrounds. Inextricably associated with the world's three most prominent religions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam), Israel is steeped in history and conflict, much of which is known through the tales of biblical figures such as Moses, David, Solomon, and, of course, Jesus Christ. But how much of the Bible can be relied upon as accurate history? And how much of the biblical record can be verified through archaeology?

Story
Profanity has always been a deliciously vibrant part of our lexicon, an integral part of being human. In fact, our ability to curse comes from a different part of the brain than other parts of speech - the urgency with which we say "f--k!" is instead related to the instinct that tells us to flee from danger. Language evolves with time, and so does what we consider profane or unspeakable. Nine Nasty Words is a rollicking examination of profanity, explored from every angle: historical, sociological, political, linguistic.

Story
The story of the many crusades are filled with an unremitting passion to keep or return the home of Christianity to Christians. It is also filled with death, destruction, disorder, greed, avarice, and self-interest on all sides. Much of what occurred during the Crusades has come down to us today in the form of continued suspicion among religious ideologies - not only between Christians and Muslims, but also internally among Christian sects and, to some degree, among Muslim sects.

The Bright Ages takes us through 10 centuries and crisscrosses Europe and the Mediterranean, Asia, and Africa, revisiting familiar people and events with new light cast upon them.

Problems arise when our perception of the dream becomes clouded with negativity, drama, and judgment (of ourselves and others), because it's in these moments of suffering that we have forgotten that we are the architects of our own reality and we have the power to change our dream if we choose.

The book of Enoch was thought to be lost for over 2,000 years until, in 1773, a traveller brought three copies back from Ethiopia. Whether or not this ancient book was actually authored by Enoch, the father of Methuselah and great-grandfather of Noah, is an ongoing debate among historians and theologians. But all recognise the book of Enoch as one of the most important apocalyptic works outside of the Bible.

Mystics and sages have long maintained that there exists an interconnecting cosmic field at the roots of reality that conserves and conveys information, a field known as the Akashic record. Recent discoveries in vacuum physics show that this Akashic field is real and has its equivalent in science's zero-point field that underlies space itself. This field consists of a subtle sea of fluctuating energies from which all things arise: atoms and galaxies, stars and planets, living beings, and even consciousness.

Story
Turning the other cheek does not mean standing by while the enemies of God dismantle Christian civilization and brainwash our children. Decrying the cowardice that masquerades as meekness, Eric Metaxas summons the Church to battle. An attenuated and unbiblical “faith” based on what Bonhoeffer called “cheap grace” has sapped the spiritual vitality of millions of Americans. Paying lip service to an insipid “evangelism,” they shrink from combating the evils of our time. Metaxas refutes the pernicious lie that fighting evil politicizes Christianity.

The secret to happiness is to acknowledge and transform suffering, not to run away from it. Here, Thich Nhat Hanh offers practices and inspiration transforming suffering and finding true joy. Thich Nhat Hanh acknowledges that because suffering can feel so bad, we try to run away from it or cover it up by consuming. We find something to eat or turn on the television. But unless we’re able to face our suffering, we can’t be present and available to life, and happiness will continue to elude us.

Divine Institution/Fallible Humans
If you could sum up The Modern Scholar in three words, what would they be?
Informative, Objective, Insightful
What other book might you compare The Modern Scholar to and why?
I have not read any book that offered such a comprehensive history of the Church in the Middle Ages.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of the narrator?
Someone who can read clearly without it sounding like a lecture without any notes. Of course, to be fair, it is a "lecture," but I could do without all of the "uh" and other such pauses. On the positive side, and the reason for two stars (vs. none), his pronunciation was flawless. In fact, I am going to upgrade him to a three for that reason alone (since it's so rare)
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I suppose I did have an extreme reaction to the book and it would be closer to "cry" than to "laugh." In the aftermath of the Second Vatican Council in the late 1960's, when so many Catholics were questioning all of the radical changes to the liturgy, we were told that the changes actually restored our religion to that of its early years. This is obviously hogwash, as the author clearly shows. The Church of 10th century was in most fundamental respects the same as the pre-Vatican II church of the 1950's. The current Catholic Church, by comparison, does not even seem "Catholic" (or holy, or apostolic). That was a shocker to me.

Would you listen to The Modern Scholar again? Why?
Yes, compared to the Great Courses overview of the Catholic Church, it was a fair, clear, and comprehensive chronological overview of the Catholic faith. The information is provided in a clear and concise manner, that is easily recalled later.

A good way to fill in your knowledge
This professor does not narrate something he wrote, he just wings it, apparently with bullet points in front of him. So it's fresh and natural; he speaks in a conversational manner. That's good, but if you want lively and engaging you've come to the wrong place. That's not his personality. He knows his history and lays out the material sensibly. I'm running while I listen and can't take in a lot of information quickly, so his slow talking is a plus for me. But it may not be for you.

Fascinating lectures, well organized and delivered
I am a big fan of Professor Madden. I particularly like his calm delivery style and his occasional flashes of humor. Although I’m not Catholic, I appreciated the sympathetic look at medieval history and the Catholic Church.
I listen before I go to sleep so his evenhanded tone is much appreciated. I am very happy to find traditional history lectures, as opposed to reading a book like some of the current great courses seem to be.
I think this would be a good one for a homeschooler. If you don’t have any background in the medieval era, it would be good to listen to something by Professor Madden or one of the great courses on the subject.
