Resumen del Editor

Young Jude Brighton has been missing for three days, and while the search for him is in full swing in the small town of Deer Valley, Oregon, the locals are starting to lose hope. They're well aware that the first 48 hours are critical and after that, the odds usually point to a worst-case scenario. And despite Stevie Clark's youth, he knows that, too; he's seen the cop shows. He knows what each ticking moment may mean for Jude, his cousin and best friend.

That, and there was that boy, Max Larsen - the one from years ago, found dead after also disappearing under mysterious circumstances. And then there were the animals: pets gone missing out of yards. For years, the residents of Deer Valley have murmured about these unsolved crimes...and that a killer may still be lurking around their quiet town. Now, fear is reborn - and for Stevie, who is determined to find out what really happened to Jude, the awful truth may be too horrifying to imagine.

So good…

There is a lot of character development in the beginning, but the characters are so well developed, and interesting, that it’s not a chore to get through. It speeds up quickly and doesn’t slow down. It is reminiscent of early Stephen King. I loved this book. The narration was wonderful. This is horror at its best. Ania Ahlborn is a master! This is my second book of hers and I’m on to my third. I believe I’ve found my new favorite horror writer.

Another 5 Star For Ahlborn

Any additional comments?

This is a well told, unique story. I'm a fan of Ania Ahlborn because there is no particular formula to her stories. This one is no exception. It is somewhat creepy and disturbing, not so much scary, but I really enjoyed it. I didn't want it to end. If you like a good story, are good with being a bit disturbed and don't need warm fuzzies when you complete a novel, give this one a go.

Ania Ahlborn is a brilliant story teller!!

Absolutely thoroughly enjoyed this from cover to cover!! I find Ania Ahlborn to be an incredible writer with great characters that bloom on the page! I’ve read everything she’s written that I can get my hands on. I’m a Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Jeff Strand fan! And Ania Ahlborn can keep up with some of the best.

Frustratingly Lacking

After spending some time reading reviews of this book it seems like I’m the only person that doesn’t like the Rosie story. In contrast with Stevie‘s narrative, hers felt unbelievably cliché and just sucked all excitement and mystery right out of the book. It was so painfully predictable and spending so much time with the creature baby just made it less scary. For example finding out the “devil incarnate” can’t travel that far or even get through closed doors made it seem pretty pathetic.

Also, dedicating half of the book to explaining the creatures origin just made the ending even more frustrating and confusing. Which probably irks me the most because I love unreliable narrator stories. Typically the twist ending is supposed to make all of the sprinkled details snap into place resulting in a huge revelation!! This ending however just made me feel like I should have skipped all of the Rosie chapters.

This book was so close to being great Ania’s writing from a disturbed 10 yr boys perspective is phenomenal! It’s a shame it was dragged down so bad with too many plot devices that should have been better streamlined in editing.

Spooky and compelling

Great writing and a twisted story combined with great narration makes for a “can’t stop listening” experience. Move over Stephen King.. you have some competition! I’m adding Ania Ahlborn to my favorites list.

Well, I didn't sleep for 2 days

pretty great, just the main character kind of annoyed me with his speech patterns.

A dark twisted story

This books really not what I expected, I’d say it deserves 5 stars however there are a couple plot holes I’m going to talk about here so spoilers ahead…

At the end of the book, Not- Jude fights Stevie in some weird crazy form, or that’s what were lead to believe. There’s a chance that Stevie was succumbing to his schizophrenia and hallucinating it all, but I’m somewhat doubtful. Though one supporting fact of that would be that no one who witnessed the fight claims that it wasn’t anything aside from a cold blooded murder, despite all that happened. Stevie getting degloved, Terry stepping into to help fight Not-Jude, Duncan recognizing that Stevie is degloved. All things that I feel like would be hard for a mind to hallucinate, but then again I’m unsure I know enough about the mind to make that call.

Stevie goes to a psych ward. As soon as I saw Jude tell Stevie to go tell his mother all that happened, I assumed this is where the book would go. While the mystery of if Jude is actually a monster or not remains, what’s true is that Otto is absolutely out there, and so is Rasputin (who in 99.99% sure is the devil). In the epilogue, years after Stevie is institutionalized, Ras sets up shop in the town as the bike shop. It’s confirmed by part 2 that Ras is a part of a biker gang, so that makes sense, and he claims that he’s going to turn the old house into a resort, also something that lines up with Ras. So I accept Ras is real from comparing what we know about him when he’s first introduced and the epilogue. I’m sure Otto is real because the reporter sees him in the epilogue watching her from afar in the woods, and he’s Ras’s son.

All in all, I felt like the ending was rather abrupt, and makes you feel like you’re also schizophrenic just as Stevie is. Perhaps it’s to try and put you in the mindset of Stevie? I’m unsure. It’s a good read, a lot of content and interesting. Would recommend.

Exceptional horror!!!

This is the second book I've read by Ahlborn & now I'll be searching out my third!
"The Devil Crept In" grabs you from chapter one and doesn't set you free until the very end. I couldn't stop until I finished it!
I read a lot of horror fiction and it's rare that something moves me enough to leave a review.
For me, it was one of those rare stories that flow so well you burn right through it but wish you hadn't because you're sad when it ends.
I thought there was a good balance of everything it takes to make a good horror story: plot, scene, character development...emotion, suspense, mystery, gore.
Ahlborn knows how to make her readers care about the characters -- one of the many elements she knows how to bend & manipulate to make a good horror story work.
If you're teetering back-and-forth on what to add to your library next, I highly recommend this one, it's well worth the credit!
