Publisher's summary

Surviving the first days of the apocalypse, William is a wreck and hiding in an attic. The daily acid storms, floating elementals, and bizarre mutated animals are the least of his problems. The reality-warping apocalypse has rules and a system much like those in video games. To survive, he must learn how the new uncooperative system works, choose a class without any real knowledge of what it does and create a place safe from the spawning horrors.

For William, staying alive isn’t enough. He will need to bring other survivors together and build a fortification large enough for all of them if he ever wants to strike back at the things that took everyone he loved. That is if he can ever gain control over himself and finally get any answers to what has happened.

pretty good

all in all pretty good lit rpg fight scenes are engaging but not so long that you start to zone out and exposition is kept to a minimum you actually show rather then tell. but probably should cut back on grown men from the south crying so much. I get emotional time for characters but they were crossing into cringe territory and men from the south aren't that well adjusted. anyway can't wait for next installment.

Best LitRPG this year! Great story & narration!

D.K. Landtroop writes an amazing LitRPG. My favorite this year so far! William, the MC, is highly relatable and enjoyable to watch as he figures out the system, develops himself, those around him, and the community. The base building elements are fun to read and listen to as well as the world building. I'd HIGHLY recommend this one! Audio Version: Andrew Tell does an amazing job narrating and each character. If I had a story to narrate I'd throw him my money in a heart beat!

Impressive!

This is my first time actually reading something from the LitRPG genre. The Fortifier is well written, the voice actor reads very well, the story has a great pace and flow mixed with emotional ups and downs! I look forward to hearing the second book.

Worth the read!

This is a very well thought out story about growing a community from the ashes and building up humanity in a world where everyone is trying to do the right thing even when it leads to terrible wrongs.

90% there

Really enjoyed story, leveling, base building, and the characters. Dial it back a bit on the emotional breakdowns. Emotions kick in the down time, not so much in thee fight. Can't wait until the sequel.

Great pic

The narrator doesn't have much in the line of different voices but he does distinguish between male and female well. He also is a very good choice for this book.

Ridiculously Good Listen!

There is a lot to talk about with this book and all of it is good. Let's start with the mc who is in his early fifties and out of shape. Wow, that's me! No wonder I like this book. He picks the class of Fortifier witch sound like a really lame class in a world where the system rules and fighting is a must. However, a Fortifier can make more than one base and make upgrades to it that others can't. The next thing about the mc that you won't get from the first few chapters is that he is a fighter. Now things get interesting.

The man can fight and make fortified bases which can give others a safe space. He actively looks for others to share the safety while building the beginnings of civilized life amidst the System's craziness. This is base building from a different perspective and done extremely well. The other part of this is the mc has to deal with survivors' guilt and the anger due to all that the System took from him. Yeah, the man has some anger issues. He also has built a community that can help him deal with everything from the mundane day to day issues and projects to the emotional crap that everyone has from experiences dealing with the System.

This was an excellent book that needs an immediate sequel! I mean it didn't really end with a cliffhanger but WTF I wanted at least 2 more chapters. Andrew Tell's performance was excellent especially considering this was a solo performance. Now to address that pesky label. I did receive a free code for this book in return for an HONEST and EARLY review. Free doesn't mean good. I can honestly say to those of you who are considering this book, go for it, you won't be disappointed.

Great Book One

the apocalypse arrives and takes everything from him. Now he's fighting to protect those who are left and create a community where all are safe and can continue to be safe. Its not what he wants but its what he going to do because its right. This was a great introduction to this series. I'm whole heartedly looking forward to book two.

I think Andrew Tell was a great choice to narrate this book. It's the first time I've heard any narration by him and I was pleasantly surprised and impressed.

Good, not Great

There are a lot of things this book does well. The world-building is fantastic, and the fights are great. The characters feel real and are unique and add value to the story.

There are a few things the book does poorly. The most notable is the severe lack of detail. The MC's main ability is to create/restore buildings. I don't remember a single time that a building was described in detail, no architecture, no decor, no shape, or orientation. They are simply given... a single adjective like small or big.
The second large flaw was that the MC's personality wasn't compelling, he is described as having anger issues, and being emotionally traumatized by the whole apocalypse thing. But yeah... he has an emotional breakdown every other chapter. He isn't bad enough to ruin the book, but his personal emotional experience is brought up way too much.

Overall, I would recommend this book to those who don't mind not having a compelling, MC or imagery.

Great don’t listen to others

Allot of complaining about him being to emotional in other reviews but it’s definitely very good I will say it bothers me a little he doesn’t explore his strengths more but overall a good book.
