Publisher's summary

War rages as the Great Extermination spreads in the latest installment of Larry Correia’s best-selling Son of the Black Sword epic fantasy series.

The assassination of the chief judge has pushed the Capitol to the edge. The Great Extermination has spread to all the land. The casteless must be annihilated.

Their only hope is the fallen Protector Ashok Vadal. But Vadal is being held prisoner on the island of Fortress. In order to save those who need him most, he must escape and find his way across the demon-infested sea and return to Thera, the prophet of an illegal and forgotten god. It is she who has sent the Sons of the Black Sword to war against the warrior caste, hoping to buy time until Vadal’s return.

But as the chaos swirls, Grand Inquisitor Omand Vokkan launches a coup to install Lord Protector Devedas as his puppet king. Devedas has no intention of being anyone’s puppet, but it may not matter. For Vokkan has struck a secret bargain with a demon. Vokkan will destroy the casteless for this ancient being; in exchange, he will be granted the power of the ancient gods.

Ashok Vadal, Thera, and the Sons of the Black Sword face foes both human and supernatural, Byzantine political intrigue and bloody hand-to-hand combat, gods and demons alike. But Vadal is a warrior with a warrior’s heart, and woe to those who would stand in his way—man, god, demon, or otherwise!

Larry Correia is the creator of the Wall Street Journal and New York Times best-selling Monster Hunter International series, with first entry Monster Hunter International, as well as urban fantasy hardboiled adventure saga The Grimnoir Chronicles, with first entry Hard Magic, and epic fantasy series The Saga of the Forgotten Warrior, with first entry Son of the Black Sword. He is an avid gun user and advocate who shot on a competitive level for many years. Before becoming a full-time writer, he was a military contract accountant, as well as a small-business accountant and manager. Correia lives in Utah with his wife and family.

The genuine struggle and hardship these characters are put through I captivating.

Another excellent installment to the series. Fans of Dark Epic Fantasy will most likely enjoy this series a lot. The main Anti-Hero to Hero saga is a bit predictable but there is much more than that to enjoy. The depth of the characters increase and noone seems safe from being "written out" at some point.

Simply the best fantasy being written today

Larry Correia is a great writer, and unless he stumbles and falls into a vat of moron, this is going to be the greatest series he has written yet. If he finishes as well as he started, it’s going to be a series only comparable to the Wheel of Time, the Sword of Shannara, Game of Thrones, and Sanderson’s Stormlight Archives. It’s better than the latter on the list, more important and moreover interesting. The adventure on its face is riveting, but Correia delves into existentialist philosophy as he confronts an atheistic world living with demons.

Great book

I hope we don't have to wait so long for the next one. The wonderful setting, and character development in this novel makes it probably the best in the series so far.

Excellent

This book is an excellent 4th installment in the series. Correia masterfully ties up lose ends from book 3 whilst presenting additional material for readers to speculate on.

it's delightful to see characters grow and change while still remaining true to their essential selves.

Fantastic

I adore the series. A fantasy that defines the word epic. This newest entry is no exception. The character growth of not just the main cast but some prominent side characters, and plot progression were masterfully done. Tim Gerard Reynolds delivers a captivating performance. Can hardly wait for the conclusion of the series.

The ending when Ashok changed the sword.

As always, a great fantasy tale with highs and lows that keep you wanting to stop. Thank you
