Adrian Cox-Settles, educator extraordinaire, experienced many challenges growing up in the inner-city housing projects of Baltimore City. Her many challenges included: bullying, colorism, obesity, reading deficiencies, and violence coupled with family dysfunction that included alcoholism and other drug addictions, and incarceration. She found solace and a way to express herself in drawing, writing poetry, and doing math problems. The life lessons she learned from her challenges growing up, were steppingstones in her journey that have aided in her success story today. She beat the odds by graduating high school, matriculating to Morgan State University, and graduating college. Upon graduation, she decided to give back to her community by accepting a mathematics teaching position with the Baltimore City Public School System. She also taught at the Baltimore City Community College. She moved beyond the classroom to become a lead teacher and department chair. In 2014 she was hailed Outstanding Teacher of the Year by the National Technical Association (NTA). During her tenure, she revived her love for tutoring beyond the classroom. She had tutored throughout her college years. Her love for tutoring blossomed into her becoming the proprietor of an online business, Diverse Interactive Learning (Math Does Matter, LLC). Diverse Interactive Learning allows her to uplift, inspire, and encourage academic greatness throughout the United States. Growing up, she didn’t always see light at the end of the tunnel, but she felt it in her heart. She is grateful for her journey as she continues to serve, learn, and grow. Her love and fear of God and the love of her family has kept her grounded and propels her forward. We look forward to greater things from educator extraordinaire, Adrian Cox-Settles.
