This is me, Dani Forrest, a writer from about the age of eight. I began with incredibly optimistic, stapled-together notebook paper books about girls who had dogs and horses and who lived in worlds where pluckiness always saved the day and also resulted in additional dogs and horses. Whatever else I did after that, the writing part stuck. My ninth grade English teacher Mr White, who more routinely shamed me for gum-chewing and other in-class faux pas, actually called me out in front of my classmates for my ability. That stuck too and I’m grateful for that motivation. I forgive him for the other stuff. I majored in English at Wellesley College so that I could get credit for the reading and writing I would have done anyway. When I told my Honors Thesis professor Jon Polito my intention to attend law school, he looked at me and said, “Oh, dear. I really wish you wouldn’t.” Well, I did. Law school happened. Actual lawyering, not so much. And there were a few other career detours along the way. But always I wrote—well, journaled, actually. And then the journaling inspired a book that took shape mostly after my husband passed away in 2017. That one is “52 Pickup: Life in Perfect Disorder.” Prior to that in publishing but written subsequently is “I Am Pink, co-written with my friend and fellow seeker Gregory Copploe. And there will be more, because writing is the one thing other than moving my body that keeps me from losing my mind and that also brings me joy. I live in California with three irritable cats but also with a very definite sense of possibility.
