Darryl Johnson II (b. 1984) is a native of Southern California. He began publishing wind band literature in 2010 and has since gone on to produce over 50 concert works for wind band, orchestra, and jazz band. In 2012, he established The Composition Experience to provide opportunities for academic ensembles to gain experience with a living composer and interact directly with the mechanics of music composition. Since then, he has worked with hundreds of bands and orchestras in over 40 states and 3 countries, conducted his music in numerous concerts, collaborated on new and inventive commissions, and guided countless students through the fundamentals of the composition process. As a result of a rigorous and wide-ranging travel schedule, Darryl Johnson II has been able to produce academic ensemble literature that reflects the experience-rich feedback of ensemble directors from a variety of backgrounds and he has likewise honed the craft of academic exposition along the way. Consequently, he has received regular laudits for a supportive and relatable approach to his work with students and ensembles. In 2021, he released his first fiction work, "If Ever You Think of Me" along with its theatrical audiobook companion, complete with an original score.
