With an MA from UT-Austin and PhD from CU-Boulder, Gary has taught writing, literature, and humanities at several flagship universities and has published books for adults and children. His novels include Hippies, which traces the fate of a small group of hippies through comic and poignant moments as they struggle through the end of the 1960s, and Goodbye, Maggie, a comic drama road trip romp through Louisiana triggered when a young man’s brother shows up with the news that he has murdered someone. He has had a novella (Love’s Ragged Claws) shortlisted for the Faulkner-Wisdom Prize, a children’s book featured in the Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators Market, a scholarly book selected for Edwin Mellen Press’s Studies in British Literature series, and a screen adaptation of his novel, Mr. Robert’s Bones, was selected to the second round (top 10%) at the Austin Film Festival. Gary was born in New Orleans, has hitchhiked through 35 states and 16 countries, run two marathons, and once, due to a series of misadventures, spent six months as the chef at a French restaurant.
