John Davis is a wildways scout, editor, and writer. Along with Dave Foreman and a dozen other prominent conservationists, John was a co-founder of Wildlands Network twenty years ago and has served on its board of directors much of the time since. He serves as executive director of The Rewilding Institute and editor of rewilding.org. John was also co-founder of Wild Earth journal (with Dave Foreman, Reed Noss, Mary Byrd Davis, and David Johns) and served as its editor from 1991-96, when he turned editorship over to his long-time friend Tom Butler and went to work for the Foundation for Deep Ecology. John oversaw FDE’s Biodiversity and Wildness grants program from 1997-2002. He then joined the Eddy Foundation as a board member and continues to serve as volunteer land steward for that foundation in its work to conserve lands in Split Rock Wildway. This wildlife corridor links New York’s Champlain Valley with the Adirondack High Peaks via the West Champlain Hills, and is the subject of his latest book: SPLIT ROCK WILDWAY: Scouting the Adirondack Park's Most Diverse Wildlife Corridor. John served as conservation director of the Adirondack Council from 2005 to 2010. In 2011, John completed TrekEast, a 7500-mile muscle-powered exploration of wilder parts of the eastern United States and southeastern Canada—sponsored by Wildlands Network and following lines suggested in Dave Foreman’s book REWILDING NORTH AMERICA—to promote restoration and protection of an Eastern Wildway. In 2012, John wrote a book about that adventure, BIG, WILD, and CONNECTED, published by Island Press initially as three e-books and more recently as a single paperback. In early 2013, John set out from Sonora, Mexico, trekking north along the Spine of the Continent as far north as southern British Columbia, Canada, finishing in late September, and again promoting habitat connections, big wild cores, and wide ranging species, including top predators—all of which would be well served by fuller protection of the Western Wildway he explored. That 5000-mile muscle-powered adventure is featured in the film BORN TO REWILD.
