K.J. Backer is an American writer, wife, mother, pet mom, teacher, and singer who currently resides in Idaho. K.J. began writing Nav'Aria while substitute teaching and then continued while working as a high school history teacher in Montana. In 2017, she "retired" from teaching to begin her journey to motherhood through adoption. She credits her writing inspiration to her miracle daughter, able to relate to her characters and book (with adoption themes) in a new way. The Nav'Aria trilogy released 2019-2020 and has found a place in many readers' hearts. (This fantasy series filled with unicorn warriors, lore and war, and a ton of adventure is EPIC... and intended for adults.) Since then, K.J. went back and taught high school history during the pandemic ('20-'21) and then began writing a new series for a younger audience. One her daughter, friends' kids, and students could read filled with adventure, funny animal antics, and heartwarming moments of love and friendship along the way. She affectionately refers to her Pet Legends as "love letters to her pets." The Legend of Tiny Tails was inspired by her dogs, childhood in rural Montana, and Crow students. The Legend of the Colosseo Cat came after sharing her photos from Italy with history students, and their constant questions not about the Roman ruins, but rather all the feral cats in the background! And The Legend of the Plaid Parakeet, her latest book, was inspired after her trip to Melbourne, Australia, and her tour through the Melbourne Gaol where she first learned of Ned Kelly, the infamous bushranger. Besides writing, K.J. loves chatting with readers. (Follow on social!). She also reads a ton, teaches writing and voice lessons, eats way too much pizza, randomly decided to run a marathon in 2021 and survived, enjoys binge-watching shows with her hubby, cracking jokes with her teen, and spends far too much time talking to her pets. Though she loves doing many things, nothing makes her happier than spending time with her husband, daughter, two pomeranians, chihuahua, min pin senior rescue, tortoise, and fish.
