Larry Nowicki is an expert in self-defense who started his martial arts training in 1969 and attained an 8th degree Black belt with his first instructor. Since then he's trained in Kenpo, Chin-na, Jujitsu, Judo, Tai Chi and much more. He joined The Defenders Club where he learned how to use these arts for self-defense. After getting his first degree black belt he was allowed to join the special unit. This was the first organization accredited by the Maryland State Board of Education to teach instructors how to teach martial arts. In this organization he learned how to teach kids, teenagers, young adults, older adults, people with handicaps and disabilities, bodyguards, police officers, auxiliary police, military and others. Some were members of organizations that do not exist and what they did never happened. There are some of us still around who enjoy sharing with different schools the knowledge that we acquired. He joined with other instructors and formed the Chinese Self-Defense Association. He taught through Rec Councils sharing his knowledge of self-defense. Falling skills are taught early in the training along with the other skills. This is a valuable tool which can be used in everyday life. One of his unique strategies was to go and learn other styles and applications to bring back to his group and share. All trainers had different preferences, body shapes and abilities. Larry brought back the different styles and shared with other trainers. He added combat Tai Chi to the mix of Arts he taught. We do it for health - It is not healthy to get hit. This is what the old people in China used to defend themselves from the young punks. It incorporates balance, body mechanics and structure with natural movements to get the most power and efficiency in self-defense situations. When some of his students reach black belt they're invited to join the group. They in turn go out learn new stuff and bring it back for all to share. In this way we expand everybody's skills and knowledge. When put together we have over 300 years of experience. Over the years many styles have been incorporated into what I do. After receiving his 8th degree black belt it was nice to go to two other schools and be recognized not by the students but by their instructors. It feels good when you walk into a school and the instructors stop the class and has everybody turn and bow to thehigher rank. Larry likes being invited to schools to gently humble some of the advanced students. The heads of these schools ask if we could come and show these students what they don't know. One of Larry's things is weapons. That is how he got interested in making them. He makes impact and edged weapons and also teaches how to improvise anything into a weapon. When teaching self-defense Larry and his colleagues don't usually wear uniforms or ranks. There are no refs on the street. Attackers don't care who you are. We practice in what we will wear. Street clothes. When someone comes into our classes even without belts and uniforms they know who the instructors are. Beliefs Larry doesn't call himself a master but knows more than most who do. Always a student. Larry has almost 50 years of training people how to defend themselves. He teaches people the most important skill to learn - how to recognize a threat. Experiences gained from encounters with skilled and unskilled people over the last century have provided him with a keen awareness of what to look for. Most of what you need is instruction and encouragement from someone who has "been there and done that!" with how to recognize a threat and what to do about it. Larry's book contains the fundamentals that everyone needs to survive on the street and be the one who goes home.
