Lillie Mae Henley graduated from Nederland High School in Texas and commenced her undergraduate work at Lamar University, Beaumont. Life happened and like most southern women, her M.R.S. took priority over any university degree. She returned to college in her early thirties and received a cum laude distinction in a Bachelor of Science in communications. She worked for several Fortune 250 companies during her career in marketing, systems analysis, and training in small to mid-size office systems to large information technology, as well as data processing software to legal and accounting firms. Later she returned to Lamar University for post-baccalaureate work in English literature, Black literature, pedagogy, communications theory, organizational theory, and journalism. Once she answered her call to ministry, she attended Meadville Lombard Theological School, Chicago, Illinois, where she received the professional degree Master of Divinity. Her core interests were world religions, African American spirituality, religion in literature, women in religion and sociological training at University of Chicago in family systems theory. Along with her studies, she trained as a chaplain in hospitals for six months and as an intern minister at a large Unitarian Universalist Church in Raleigh, North Carolina.
