Marlin Bree is a former newspaper editor who discovered the joys of sailing, especially on Lake Superior. Over the course of seven years, he built his 20-foot sailboat, Persistence, beside his home in Shoreview, MN, and began sailing solo on the world's largest freshwater lake, following the early canoe routes of the ancient Voyageurs, Black Robes, and fur traders. His quest for exploration took him into what is now the world's largest freshwater conservation area along the northern rim of Superior, where he met many adventures, including surviving the storm of the century with terrifying 123 mph. winds and high waves. He quickly became a published writer in boating magazines, including The Ensign, Small Craft Advisor, Sailing, and Cruising World. In time, his writing expertise drew in many other sailors, including Gerry Spiess, whose 10-foot Yankee Girl set a world record crossing the North Atlantic, mostly under sail. Bree and Spiess wrote the best-seller Alone Against the Atlantic, published by Control Data Publications. The book went worldwide when it was published by Reader's Digest Books in the U.S., Canada, England, Japan, Italy, and Germany. One of the tales of Gerry is in Bree's latest compendium, Big Book of Bold Sea Stories, entitled Ten Feet Across the Pacific. Bree was the information officer for that fantastic voyage. At age 91, Marlin considers his Big Book of Bold Sea Stories his best collection of 40 seafaring tales. Marlin is a multi-award-winner for his sea stories, including two Grand Prize Awards from Boating Writers International. A versatile writer and editor, he collaborated with the late Loris Bree to develop children's books, including Kid's Magic Secrets, Kid's Trip Diary, and Kid's Travel Fun Book. Marlin formed his own book publishing company, Marlor Press, Inc., and has published boating and kids books for the past 40 years.
