Martin Smallridge is the pen name of Marcin Małek (born February 24, 1975, in Warsaw), a prolific poet, writer, publicist, and editor. His work spans a wide array of literary forms, from poetry and essays to translations and theatrical plays. He has been a significant voice in Polish and international literary circles, contributing to esteemed periodicals such as Fronda, Tygiel Kultury, Akcent, Polish News, Nowe Państwo, Stosunki Międzynarodowe, and Opcja na Prawo, where he explored themes of international affairs and literature. His translations of Polish poets into English have broadened the reach of Polish literature, bringing it to new audiences. As a literary critic, Martin has penned numerous essays delving into the nuances of literature, many of which are collected in his acclaimed books Breaking Through the Inky Night and A Lifetime of Questions in Thirty and One Literature Lectures. His passion for examining and interpreting literary works has cemented his reputation as a thoughtful and incisive critic. Martin’s achievements also include a series of articles in the Irish Leinster Express during the COVID-19 pandemic and a celebrated tenure as a contributor to Poetry & Paratheatre from 2010 to 2016. His poetic work earned him the prestigious Poetry & Paratheatre Art Prize in 2012 for his poem Bieg – czyli list do współczesnych (The Run – A Letter to the Moderns). He participated in the groundbreaking Th’Republic of Poets, the world’s first virtual poetry festival. Currently, Martin serves as the Editor-in-Chief of The Irish Field Archery Monthly (TIFAM), a publication he has nurtured with dedication and creativity. He is also the author of the enchanting children’s book A Drawer Full of Wonders, which sparks the imaginations of readers young and old, as well as numerous theatrical plays that delve into history, identity, and human experience. Since 2006, Martin has called Ireland home, where he continues to write, edit, and inspire, intertwining his Polish heritage with the lyrical traditions of his adopted Irish landscape.
