Mary Artino, a resident of Southern California, has been a medical social worker in hospice for fifteen years. She considers hospice work to be her artform. The stories in this book are lessons in life and loss that are seldom taught in America. Mary hopes to encourage an intergenerational dialogue where people share their experiences of loss in a culture where death is no longer taboo, but rather looked at as one stage of life. In "Lessons on Loss Not Taught," Mary tells the story of how she found her way into the world of hospice through her own family and shares her thoughts on how to process loss in a meaningful way. Finally, she brings us into the lives of some of the patients and families she's had the great honor of navigating through end-of-life care. Mary views death as one of the most profound teachers available to mankind.
