Montie Carol Montgomery, a long-time entrepreneur and business owner, has spent her life building and managing small businesses. Montie Carol's talent for finding holes in existing markets and seeing those niches became her superpower. Montie Carol is a songwriter and has always enjoyed the creativity that comes with that craft. However, this book is her first. Two Squirrels and a Girl is a legacy and passion project that ultimately received attention from historians, documentarians, and other organizations interested in preserving and telling stories of the Old West. Two Squirrels and a Girl is a poignant, gut-wrenching story of Mary Elizabeth “Libby” Haley Thompson, who eventually became known as Squirrel Tooth Alice. After beginning life as a pampered elder daughter of a small plantation owner in Texas before the Civil War, Libby’s family lost their wealth to the War. At the age of ten, she was captured and held for three years by renegade Comanches. After her family ransomed her, Libby is rejected by her entire village and most of her family. Libby found an older man who would marry her, but when she took him home to meet her father, he was shot and killed. Libby decided to start a new life and escaped on horseback, finally arriving in Abilene, KS. She was fourteen years old. This is her story. I learned about my Great-great-grandmother just a few years ago. Getting to know her after the fact has been one of my life's most impactful and gratifying experiences. I hope that I have captured the incredible spirit of this amazing but nearly-forgotten woman of the Old West.
