Paul Traynor was born in Liverpool but grew up in Gravesend, in Kent. And, yes, the town really does deserve the name. He studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Oxford (not that there was that much studying going on) where his most impressive achievement was to learn to fly an aeroplane with the University Air Squadron. In 1985 he joined 3i as a trainee investment controller and stayed for fifteen years, spending time in Birmingham, Nottingham, London and Paris. In 1996 he was appointed Managing Director 3i Midlands and a member of the UK Management Committee, specifically responsible for a team of thirty investment executives and a portfolio of 550 investments valued in excess of £700m. Since leaving 3i, he has worked extensively on a consultancy basis with an assortment of venture capital and private equity firms, independent businesses and entrepreneurs.
