Rachel Tawil Kenyon is cousin eleven of seventeen in a huge, out-loud Jewish family. She was born in New York, raised in Los Angeles, and is now settled in Nashville. Rachel credits her daughter for teaching her how to be a friend, her husband for showing her what love feels like, and her son for frosting her life with energy (in that order). Rachel’s love of kids brought her to the teaching arena, although in her words, "I'm not a teacher, I just play one on Sundays". She has more than twenty years under her belt working with children and teens at her synagogue. Her curriculum focuses on informed choice, social action, and the power of kindness. She has been on the teaching staff for over 20 years, working with elementary and middle school ages. Rachel not only brings energy to the kids within the walls of the classroom, but also takes them to meet and volunteer with the organizations they support. Over the years, Rachel and her students have advocated for local, national and international non-profits, promoting awareness and fundraising for a wide variety of communities. For Rachel, writing in rhyme comes naturally and writing about life comes from experience. Not a smooth journey by any means, Rachel lends her past choices and mistakes, and the lessons she has learned, to her writing. Rachel is passionate about promoting literacy and a love of books. “I believe whole-heartedly that the key to decreasing poverty and injustice lies in literacy and education. And the best way I can participate in that effort is by helping kids find a love of reading.” She manages an ongoing book drive that has resulted in thousands of books for kids living with poverty.
