Rodney McFarland is a semi-retired serial entrepreneur who lives with his wife of 40+ years on the bosque south of Albuquerque, New Mexico. He grew up on a farm in south central South Dakota and attended South Dakota State University to study wildlife and fisheries management. After college he moved to New Mexico where he learned to build houses. After a few years in New Mexico, he moved to Sitka, Alaska and started the first of his ten companies doing design-build custom homes. He met and married his wife Laurel while living in Sitka. When the inflation of the early 1980s made that business untenable, he and Laurel moved to Fairbanks, Alaska to attend the University of Alaska. Rodney studied Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science and Laurel got a master’s in vocational education. He met and joined forces with Fred Eaton, and they started Eaton Software Inc. which sold accounting software for a variety of business types. The expansion of Eaton Software led to his moving to the Seattle area to better support the dealer network that was selling their software. Rodney and Laurel adopted two children and his introduction to writing came when he and Laurel volunteered to produce a newsletter for the PTA of the school those children attended. They found they had a knack for producing the written word. In 1983, they helped found Citizen’s Alliance for Property Rights (CAPR) which has chapters in Washington state and California. Rod and Laurel produced the CAPR newsletter “The Naked Fish” for several years. Rod was the producer and frequent writer, and Laurel did the editing. “The Naked Fish” grew to be a 16-page color tabloid with a distribution of 45,000. Rodney helped produce a book “It’s Not About Fish” that is a collection of some of the best content from “The Naked Fish”. Since moving back to New Mexico, Rod has written “The Lost Art of Card Playing” and he and Laurel have co-written the book “Small Business Startup: The Solutions to 9 Deadly Mistakes That Your Successful Competitors Didn’t Make”. They have plans for a series of Small Business Startup books. Rod is half done with a fiction thriller but that won’t be available until the Small Business Startup series is finished.
