Shaney is a special education teacher from Madison, WI. Her unique path of teaching eventually led her to the field of teen mental health and she has never looked back. In 2019 she founded Bridge Volunteering - a nonprofit that provided engaging, hands-on volunteer opportunities for high school students. Bridge's mission was "help yourself by helping others" and served hundreds of high school kids. A can of worms called "teen mental health" was opened for Shaney during her years with Bridge which prompted her to write Back Pocket. She found that kids were struggling more than ever and many didn't know where to turn to get help. She also had a firm belief that if kids could sort of "get ahead" with their mental health and learn some proactive tools to help themselves, maybe they could avoid some of the dire situations that have become so common. Hence the easily accessible, easy to read book. Shaney currently is a teacher at a Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Hospital located in Madison, WI and absolutely loves her job. She resides in Madison with her husband, two boys and dog.
