I've been a writer most of my life, but didn't admit it until 2009. After earning a Masters from the University of Iowa in Speech & Dramatic Art, I moved to Chicago, where I worked professionally as a stage manager, director and administrator, as well as a founding board member of the League of Chicago Theatres. That morphed into my next career as a professional fundraiser, raising money for arts, educational and AIDS service organizations. After a concussion ended a successful sales career, I switched gears to keep a promise to a friend to write a book. That book turned into a series of small books on the experience of grieving the death of a friend. They are Friend Grief and Anger: When Your Friend Dies and No One Gives A Damn; Friend Grief and AIDS: Thirty Years of Burying Our Friends; Friend Grief and 9/11: The Forgotten Mourners; Friend Grief and the Military: Band of Friends; Friend Grief in the Workplace: More Than an Empty Cubicle; Friend Grief and Men: Defying Stereotypes. In 2015, I was named Library Journal's first SELF-e Ambassador, promoting their initiative to put self-published e-books into US libraries. That same month, my essay, "Long-Term Survivor" won the 2015 Christopher Hewitt Award for Creative Nonfiction from A&U Magazine. The latest book - a nearly five-year effort to correct both women's history and the history of the AIDS epidemic - Fag Hags, Divas and Moms: The Legacy of Straight Women in the AIDS Community - was published in March, 2019 and established me as an authority of the contributions of this group. My current project is a return to grieving our friends: What Our Friends Left Behind: Grief and Laughter in a Pandemic, due out in May 2023. I've written freelance articles for Huffington Post, Chicago Tribune and Windy City Times, as well as a variety of grief and writing blogs. With two degrees in theatre, public speaking is an important part of my writing business. Topics can be found on my website and all of my presentations are available both in person and virtually. I'm a member of the Authors Guild, Nonfiction Authors Association, Alliance of Independent Authors, ACT UP/NY, and the Chicago AIDS Garden planning committee. I remain a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan, as well as a lover of musical theatre, all things British and dark chocolate. Sign up for my newsletter and keep up with all the news at victorianoe.com
