Brandon Sanderson is easily one of the most recognizable names in the Fantasy genre. As the creator of some of the most acclaimed series of all time like Stormlight Archive and Mistborn, Sanderson is back with his lastest installment in the Reckoners series, Lux. This Audible Original introduces a whole new group of Reckoners as they attempt to take down the descructive and calamitous group known as the High Epic Lifeforce. But like many great authors, Sanderson draws inspiration from stories he's listened to. Here are some of his favorites right now.
My favorite book of the year, this novel by the author of The Martian is an absolute delight. Science, mystery, character—it all comes together in a wonderful listen that I would recommend to literally anyone who likes stories.
This is the perfect audiobook. I had trouble getting into this novel in print and didn’t actually come to love it until I listened to the audiobook. The book has extremely slow pacing but amazing ambience and language—and hearing it read to me with a storybook quality was haunting and intoxicating.
If there are any of you out there who like my books but haven’t for some reason read or listened to V. E. Schwab, then I think you’ll love this one. The world-building is very much the way I like it—lots of nooks and crannies to explore, with intriguing effects on character and narrative. It’s a masterful novel and highly recommended to people who like Sanderson novels. She and I write in many similar ways.
Something different for the last one: a nonfiction listen about the founding and development of Pixar as a studio, told from the viewpoint of the business side rather than the creative side. I found this an interesting look at the side of the business I’m not as involved in, and it talks a lot about great processes and structures to encourage creative development. If you are having trouble writing, maybe this will help you see how an outsider does what he can to help creatives shine.
