What am I reading? You might ask as you begin. Keep on and the warp & weft of the story/stories will weave together. I enjoyed the library, ballroom, and folktale themes throughout. Also the symbols, you'll see. If you like things all tidy and defined you might be uncomfortable here. Still you might loosen up and see what this experience might bring to you. Enjoy. 🥂 To seeking.

A tapestry of lives.
Revisado: 01-07-25
The lives and fortunes of Verghese's richly developed characters once again weave into a fine tapestry of excellent storytelling. Through triumphs and tragedies the readers is transported to distant eastern lands to experience life choices and ensuing repercussions of those in very different circumstances and times than those in which the westerner now lives. We come away enriched and perhaps now able to forgive ourselves for our own regretted choices seeing that such is the human condition. f

Pay attention to all the who's who and who's using an assumed name in the beginning because it's going to get really mixed up. The characters were all behaving in implausible ways and interactions were erratic. The ending was abrupt and unsatisfying. Luckily it's not a title I had to pay for.

A look into Salem Witches
Revisado: 10-26-24
Given the subject matter you will understand that this is not a feel good novel. But it is a well told engaging look into the life time and conditions that set the stage for the Salem Witch trials. And it can be seen as a cautionary tale as well. When times are hard people look for scapegoats. How is that happening today? It is revealed, of course, that the real evil was in the persons accusing and trying the so called witches. There is also a bit of historical information about England.

Historia
The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France—a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.

So worth reading!
Revisado: 07-14-24
The tags said France, WWII, feel good, and women. How does one "feel good" about a war novel. Well there are triumphs, heroinism, and light in darkness. So there's that. The story paints a beautiful picture of the French countryside and delicious French food and wine setting up a contrast for what slowly disintegrates once Nazi occupation settles over the land. As things decline heroic choices rise. At the end there are both losses and reunions and you really should be crying by then, it's quite poignant.
We have not known war to touch our home fronts since the Civil War and sadly the "Indian" wars and we are clueless. This story rouses our compassion and gratitude without us having to experience occupation. We need that at this time. We also need to be careful and look closely as our own government and it's ruling corporations are slowing and not so slowing occupying the people from within. We are frogs coming to a boil slowly enough so we don't jump out of the pot. we need to wake up!

A vision of possible
Revisado: 06-06-24
This compelling story with action and romance poses as fiction while conveying much truth. It's somewhat sci-fi, yet our day to day existence in 2024 is quite sci-fi as well. So what is fiction anyways but the label a publisher requires for the as yet not fully endorsed ideas. As Arthur C. Clarke has stated, "Any new and sufficiently advanced technology shall be indistinguishable from magic". You will learn about the Gnostic worldview and about teachings of Faery tradition, shamanism and more as this story is spun. Not least of all you will be given a vision of how sound and light (aspects of the same thing) have not only created the world we dwell within but offer us a tool by which we can be released from the mental slavery facilitated by nefarious elites. We can transform our world when we turn to love, song, nature and connection and leave behind our division, hatred, electronic devices and Ai.

Historia
Cast out of the royal court by Eleanor of Aquitaine, deemed too coarse and rough-hewn for marriage or courtly life, seventeen-year-old Marie de France is sent to England to be the new prioress of an impoverished abbey, its nuns on the brink of starvation and beset by disease. At first taken aback by the severity of her new life, Marie finds focus and love in collective life with her singular and mercurial sisters. In this crucible, Marie steadily supplants her desire for family, for her homeland, for the passions of her youth with something new to her.

Fascinating and engaging
Revisado: 02-01-23
I very much enjoyed this novel. I was a bit concerned about some of the reviews whining about the narrator and the "flat" characters. But this story isn't about a multitude of deeply explored characters. It is more about one woman's experience and development within a given set of circumstances. How she took her lemons and made exquisite lemonade. It is also about compassion and the delicacy of human feelings and experience. The story also weaves a narrative about the divine that is refreshing and inspired. I had no problems with the narration, and I can be picky. listen to the sample if you're concerned.

I enjoyed listening to this two part children's adventure though I am grandma aged. It's a really delightful story and introduces a bit of aviation vocabulary while inspiring would be aviators and a can-do attitude.
