Jakes back. He's older, wiser, and better dressed. He's going to be the coolest spy ever, then he fails his pilot exam. Disgraced, Dashi sends him out hunting missing food shipments. It's boring, but Nadine's shadowing him. Is it to find out what he knows, or just to snoop on that slinky redhead free trader pilot he took to dinner?

Wow, what a struggle
Revisado: 04-29-24
This is definitely weak plot character said, character said, character said. Maybe 6th grade reading level. The narrator is weak at best. Voice creation struggles, sounding alike. Punctuation accents are off. This is my third struggle in the series. They are not getting better. Seems like the narrator might be 16 or something. Really not a fan of the book, but not the narrator at all.

The Narrator does nothing to help this book. It is just forever and a day the character sitting around. I've tried this 3 times. Editors do your work.

interesting. I thought the length would be handy on a holiday trip but I have had to rewind this far more than any other audio book. Did not like the pronoun mishmash but authors fall into politics often. narrator tried but I fell asleep more often than not listening to her. finally made it through. long long plot. it was good background noise

I enjoyed this look into the Queen's Road. Interplanetary travel this way was fun, especially being a gear head in addition to enjoying a good science fiction/fantasy. The elimination of future faster than light spacecraft was an interesting approach, though Skippy would probably have poo pooed the whole idea. Plot was good and ending left open for future books.

Historia
It was every starship captain’s nightmare, and for Travis Miller, it was his own personal hell. He’d done everything by the book, but when the Tahni had attacked him and his crew, there was no choice but to return fire and destroy the first alien vessel humans had ever encountered. Excoriated in the press, his career in shambles, Travis is exiled to a long patrol of the outer colony worlds. Forgotten, except as a bad example...until the Tahni prove him right by declaring war on the human commonwealth.

Disappointing at best
Revisado: 10-24-23
It's as though the author is trying to prove he did his research to say this could happen when describing the "science" of this science fiction. Adding paragraphs to describle how pellets drop to charge the nuclear engines - Please - Chapter One - good opening. Skip chapter 2 in its entirety - it's totally not needed except possibly for word count for publishing. Drudge through to Chapter 8 and that will be a slog. but an interesting concept introduced on the " map" but what a pain to get there. I'll update if I make it any further. The villains (The Tahni ) are a race from the Drop Trooper book series. This is probably not worth the effort even if it's free unless you are absolutely bored (which I was). If you've read the Drop Trooper series you know of the holy war the Tahni have. Perhaps Mr. Partlow is exploring that further. At this point, I don't think it's worth the effort to find out.

Historia
Naval Officer Jack Samson thought a posting to the frontier of human-inhabited space was the death blow to his career. He couldn't have been more wrong. A routine inspection of a small merchant vessel leads to devastating loss and the discovery of strange, fascinating objects. As astonishing discoveries unfold, a mysterious and hostile ship proves that Samson has a competitor in unlocking the secrets of an ancient alien civilization and that humanity might not be alone in the galaxy after all.

Narration is SO BAD. - DO NOT BUY -
Revisado: 11-20-22
Beware, Audible's policy is if you buy the book on discount there is no refund. It sucks because I had never encountered this narrator and while the writing could be self edited by skip reading, the narrators choice of horrible variations in diction accents and pacing is really bad. I'll just have to read it and see if the series is worth the read - without the narration AND without a refund. I guess Audible is running out of cash.

meh
Revisado: 03-30-21
The narrator can only do what the text enables, however it was pretty monotonous. Character voices were weak, little difference in tones etc. The book needs editing. Way too much soliloquys by the main character. Chases rabbits at major events in non critical ways to the story. Looks like the author was trying to meet a minimum word requirement for submitting the book.

Okay, but not edge of seat stuff
Revisado: 01-20-20
I bought this attracted but a review that compared this book to Columbus Day by Craig Alanson. Other than the fact there is an AI involved in the plot, it Is no where near that good. The narrator does a good job voicing the characters and an admirable job with gender voicing, but there is a ways to go to compare this to Columbus Day and R.C. Bray. Sorry, that comparison just is not true. It is a book to run in the background with the story evolving while you are working. It does not take over your thought process and grab your total attention. I find it entertaining and worth the discounted price, but not a full Audible credit's value.
